CCHS Newsletter 50 - 28th February 2022
Weekly Message from Mr Harding, Executive Headteacher
As we start a new half term there will undoubtedly be a number of students who feel anxious and concerned about the unfolding events in Ukraine. Indeed, in a conversation with my son yesterday he expressed what I'm sure many of us are feeling: "Dad, I'm sick of living through historical times. I've had enough of CoVid, flooding and now war in Europe - I just want things to go back to boring old normal!" Whilst we can't necessarily make "things go back to normal" on a global scale, we can at least focus on the things that we can control, that is making school as "normal" as possible. As you'll see from the contents of this week's newsletter there's plenty that we are all doing to make the students' time at Codsall High as interesting and engaging as possible.

Support for your child if they see upsetting content online about what is happening in Ukraine is available below from Childnet

Careers Fair 2022
We were happy to bring back our annual careers fair, we had 28 exhibitors taking part in this event alone. Exhibitors include, Colleges, Universities, local companies, national companies.  All of our students were timetabled to attend. The exhibitors were impressed with the quality of the questions that our students asked and made complimentary comments about their good manners.

We also had rolling assemblies for Years 9,10 and 11 which were delivered by the "Ask Apprenticeships" team.
Letters to Royal Park Nursing Home
Codsall Community High School students from both Years 9 & 10 have taken the time to write to the residents of Royal Park Nursing Home to aid their rehabilitation. We were able to send over 50  letters.  Thankyou to all the students involved and to Mrs pargeter for co-ordinating!
EduLink
The EduLink app is the easiest way for you to track your child's attendance, conduct and progress.  You can look up their timetable and see messages from staff.  The majority of our communication is via the EduLink App so if you have not downloaded it, please do.  If you experience problems with your app, please click here for advice and our contact email address.
Mobile phone reminder
Rules
1. Students are not permitted to carry or use mobile phones within the
school at any point during the school day, including break and lunch.
2. Phones must either be left at Student Services at the start of the school
day or switched off in their school bag.
Rationale
• The school places great importance on the wellbeing and safety of all
individuals and mobile phone use during the school day has been proven
to lead to incidents of;
➢ bullying
➢ intimidation
➢ deteriorating mental health and wellbeing.
Learning is impacted upon in a negative way by issues around mobile phone use for
social purposes.
Students wishing to carry a mobile phone to and from school for their personal
safety should ensure that their phone is switched off in their bag. If students are
unable to do this they should leave it in Student Services before 8.30am and then
collect it at 3.00pm. They will be issued a ticket which can be exchanged for their
phone at the end of the day.
Sanctions
Mobile phones will be confiscated if seen.  Parents or a nominated adult will be required to collect the mobile phone.
Please see details of the policy here.

Uniform Expectations
Students are aware that we expect them to wear their uniform with pride.  Should a studnet experience an incident which means that they are unable to wear an item of uniform to school for a short period of time, please provide a signed note to that effect.  We have items of uniform that we can lend students for a limited period of time.  We can also offer some support if parents are experiencing difficulty acquiring uniform.
Please note, if a student arrives in school without the correct uniform and without a note from a parent/carer, the Pastoral Team will contact home and the student may be required to spend time in our Refocus unit until the correctable uniform issue is resolved.

On-Line Reading Platform

My disease is as rare as it is famous. It’s a form of Severe Combined Immunodeficiency, but basically, I’m allergic to the world. I don’t leave my house, have not left my house in fifteen years. The only people I ever see are my mom and my nurse, Carla.

But then one day, a moving truck arrives. New next-door neighbours. I look out the window, and I see him. He’s tall, lean, and wearing all black—black t-shirt, black jeans, black sneakers and a black knit cap that covers his hair completely. He catches me looking and stares at me. I stare right back. His name is Olly. I want to learn everything about him, and I do. I learn that he is funny and fierce. I learn that his eyes are Atlantic Ocean-blue and that his vice is stealing silverware. I learn that when I talk to him, my whole world opens up, and I feel myself starting to change—starting to want things. To want out of my bubble. To want everything, everything the world has to offer.

Maybe we can’t predict the future, but we can predict some things. For example, I am certainly going to fall in love with Olly. It’s almost certainly going to be a disaster.

Have your circumstances changed recently?

Parents claiming some benefits can claim free school meals for any of their children who are registered at a Staffordshire school and who would normally be at school at lunch time. School meals are a good way to ensure that your child eats well at lunchtime and you can save yourself time and money.

Even if you don't want your children to have the meals, claiming them helps their school. The more eligible parents who claim meals, the more funding the school receives.

The phone number for the free school entitlement checking service team has changed.  Should you need to contact them regarding any claims queries, their number is now 0300 111 8007  option 3, then option 2
