How To Be Truly Thankful For Gifts

“Say Thank You.” How many times have we heard that, or said that over the last few days? Usually we hear it around children. Their parents have to remind them to communicate appreciation for the gift they just opened.

As children age, they usually automatically say “Thank You” with a smile for the gift they really value. It is often, however, the gifts that are not valued as much which require the prompt to say “Thank You”.

Being thankful for gifts can be difficult. It is hard to be thankful for the vehicle accident that uncovered the rare blood disease for which there had been no prior symptoms but if not caught

John and Paul, two great pillars of the Christian Faith both talk about Joy. John in 1 John encouraged his readers to complete joy together with him. Paul in Philippians 2 had enough joy to share with his readers encouraging them to take a portion for themselves while giving some of their joy to him.

Joy is defined as intense happiness. What could be the source of this intense happiness for these two men? What could create such satisfaction for them that they were able to share it with others and invited others to share with them?

THE DUTY OF JOY

We have a responsibility as Christ-followers to have joy. Our Joy should not be sparse or hard to detect. Paul in Philippians 4:4 exhorts all believers to “Rejoice . . .and again . . . rejoice.” That means to joy over and over again. Have joy at the very core of our life. To regularly and routinely practice joy. (Philippians 4:9)

Joy can be described as a cheerful calmness. This is not a feeling we are to manufacture. This joy is not a pile of positive thinking or optimistic oblivion. The joy we are responsible to exhibit is cheerful calmness in all circumstances. Humanly this is not possible. However, this is possible as a result of Christ in us.
