Happy Winter!

I could not imagine we are already in the ”bers” (September, October, November, December). The year 2017 has passed by so quickly for me and soon, Christmas will be here! I would like to apologize for being delayed in sending the Newsletter and missed publishing the July summer edition. I was waiting for the outcome of the PNAA National Cruise Convention we attended last July 23-30, 2017. The Convention was a memorable experience as PNASD won 3 “First Time” awards: Best Editorial Newsletter award (among 44 PNAA Chapters), Western Region award which includes PNASD Chapter for the Best Outstanding Broadway Presentation at Networking Night. We presented The Lion King and yours truly was one of the Directors. San Diego received a 3rd award for the most outstanding participants on a Filipino Nurse Survey conducted last year by PNAA Research Committee. Please read the day to day write-ups of the Convention on this article.

RECENTLY IN PNASD

The Philippine Nurses Association of San Diego County Inc (PNASD) celebrated Valentine’s Day as a fundraising event last February 11, 2017 at the Mira Mesa Senior Center, in San Diego. It was a very successful event, raising a substantial fund to support the scholarship program. This event was attended by approximately 118 guests who enjoyed lively music, line dancing, and ballroom dancing and great food provided by AARP. Through the leadership of Tessie Porciuncula, Chairman of the Event planning, PNASD President Vivian Sanderlin, who invited AARP to sponsor the dinner, and the large number of guests and several Board Members and officers, the party went very well as planned. This is one successful event on a low budget, fun, dressed down and dancing to the end and generated funds for PNASD. Thank you for your commitment, ingenuity and such an invaluable service to the great organization, PNASD FIRST!

April 23, 2017 – General membership meeting and 3rd New and Renewed Member Induction and Orientation Program
CEU – Alzheimer’s Disease and Dementia by Mr. Matthew Parcasio
Sharp Healthcare Auditorium, San Diego

Vivian D. Sanderlin – PNASD President

The 3rd Induction and Orientation of New Members of PNASD were held at Sharps Spectrum Auditorium in San Diego, CA. on April 23, 2017. The theme of the event was Happy Earth Day to minimize pollution of Mother Earth by learning to Reduce, Re-Use, and Recycle. President Vivian Sanderlin started the program with General Membership meeting followed by an hour presentation of Alzheimer’s disease by Mr. Matthew Parcasio of Live Well Stay Well County of San Diego. The members were presented certificates of Continuing Education unit by attending the lecture. Chairman of New Membership Program, Ms. Cece Echon called out each new member to come forward and receive their certificates of membership. The Oath Taking followed the morning program with 16 new members doing the Oath with the President. After the Induction, each member came up to the microphone to say a few words of why they joined PNASD. They listened afterwards to a presentation by Ms. Fe Delosreyes to “What is it for me to join PNASD”. Certificates, lanyards and gift of soil earth with plants signifying its Earth Day theme were presented to all new Inductees. Below are Testimonials of the new members about their experience with PNASD after the Induction.

Angie Cruz, RN

“It’s been a longtime coming but I am glad I have joined the PNASD! Looking forward to great and productive years ahead. At this early on, I am one proud PNASD member!”

Norine Petrivelli, RN

“What I like about PNASD is it focuses more in utilizing the strength of professional nurses in providing services to the community. On top of that, PNASD is a group of nurses helping other nurses. It’s like “Bayanihan”. I am proud to belong in this organization because not only that it will help me grow professionally, it will also provide me a sense of worth by giving back to the community. Thank you for inducting me.”

Margie Louis, RN

“It is an honor to be a member of PNASD. The Association has made a difference in people’s lives and I am thrilled to be part of this wonderful organization”

Helen Dirolf, RN

“It was a pleasure attending the Oath Taking. The topic of Alzheimer’s was very relevant and well presented! The venue was great! The food was on our very own native taste. Kudos to everyone at PNASD! Keep it up! I will help recruit more members. I signed up in that committee. Thank you”

Violet Rubio, Student Nurse Member

“I will forever be grateful to you and the PNASD for giving me the opportunity to join this prestigious organization. I am honored to be a part of this wonderful organization that feels more like a family. You have given me a sense of belonging and I feel welcome. I want to make you all proud as you have given me motivation to be the best nurse I can be. As a new member I already feel the unity and support. I will work hard to become an asset and to help make PNASD great. I will represent PNASD with pride and honor.

You are all so special, hard working and dedicated. This induction has given me new motivation and excitement about becoming a nurse. I will take PNASD in my heart as I graduate and pass my boards.”
