PNASD attended Dr. Camacho’s Celebration

PNASD is honored to be invited to Dr. Ben Camacho’s celebration that included more than 500 guests including the Philippine Medical Association President, Dr. Gil Ungab, an electrophysiologist/cardiologist, the members of the PMA and leaders in the community. Dr. Camacho, our celebrant was the Immediate Past-President of PMA. Leaders from different organizations including the Mayor of National City, Mayor Ron Morrison, and Atty. Audie De Castro were present at the event. PNASD members Merly Ferrer, Chona Lutap, Merlie Ramira, Vickie Berbano, Vivian Sanderlin, Gemma Rama-Banaag, and Jose Samson attended the celebration. During the event, Vivian Sanderlin recruited a new member for PNASD. We were able to network with Dr. Ungab on collaboration with PMA with community health events. We enjoyed the food, ambience of camaraderie, networking opportunities, and the hospitality of Dr. Camacho and his family. It was a wonderful celebration!

PNASD’s Annual Picnic, A Success!
Cece M. Echon, MSN, RN

Summertime picnic is a beloved tradition of the PNASD family. This year on August 16, 2015, the picnic was held once again at De Anza Cove in Mission Bay, a popular spot for its location by the bay, playground for the kids, and a huge gazebo with multiple tables and benches. Dr. Merlie Ramira, PNASD President, welcomed everyone and thanked the sponsor, Generations Healthcare, for providing the food.

The event started with an opening prayer led by Vickie Berbano, PNAA and PNASD board member. The fun started right after with delicious, sumptuous food. Sue Fortuno, from Generations Healthcare did an excellent job in selecting the menu. The entire, huge table was filled with lechon kawali, pancit bihon, pinakbet , sweet and sour red snapper fish, chicken adobo, chop-suey, Mexican dishes to name a few. The other table was filled with appetizers and desserts. What a feast!!!!

This year’s event was organized and coordinated by our marketing guru, Vivian Sanderlin, PNASD’s President-elect who is also full of vigor and energy. She orchestrated the program and planned multiple exciting games and activities for all ages (6-senior citizens)! The fun and exciting games became the core of the picnic. Well-equipped with music and portable microphone, Vivian got everybody’s attention by leading the line-dancing portion of the program. She also included 50/50 opportunity drawing for fund-raising and with that PNASD received $128.00. The second half of the opportunity drawing concluded the games and prizes were donated by Dr. Merlie Ramira.

As part of the event, it has been a tradition to celebrate the birthdays of those born in August: Vickie Berbano, Jesse Del Mundo, Amy de Jesus, Chona Lutap, Elvie Magsarili, and Dorothy Brown. The celebrants were given a birthday hat as the attendees all sang “Happy Birthday” in front of their beautiful, chocolate birthday cake. Inspite of the sweltering triple digit temperature, the picnic event was well attended by members and their family, friends, nursing students, scholarship recipients, nursing excellence awardees, officers and board members. PNA South Riverside County, PNASD’s sub-chapter, was represented by Glynn and Gina Cascolan and family and Sandra Cid and her family.

Thank you Vivian and Sandy for your commitment and dedication, the logistics committee, and to those who helped tirelessly in the planning process. What a successful event!!!

PNASRC Health Ministry Event
Benita “Beets” Valle, BSN, RN
PNASRC President

St Martha's Catholic Church held its Health Ministry on August 16, 2015 from 7:30 am to 3 pm. Around 20 agencies from the government and private sectors responsible in maintaining and restoring physical, mental, emotional and spiritual well- being were represented.

Philippine Nurses Association of South Riverside County (PNASRC) took the vital signs of the parishioners who heard the mass at different times. Teachings on special diets, exercise and medications that some church attendees are on were reinforced. We also had the opportunity to network with the other areas of nursing.

Aside from making our professional organization shine and be visible in the community, we recruited 5 additional members. It was a very fulfilling and rewarding day of giving back our time and services to the community. PNASRC members who participated with the event were Beets, Ate Mel, Rexie and Olet.

PNASD attended Kick off Breakfast Meeting
“Making Strides against Breast Cancer Walk”
Jemimah Olivar and Derek Velasquez
PNASD Student Members

The morning of August 19th ushered the beginning of the American Cancer Society’s Making Strides against Breast Cancer walk, an annual event that takes place in San Diego’s Balboa Park to raise funds in the fight against breast cancer. Although the actual walk is not held until October, the event welcomed participating organizations to an exclusive Kickoff Breakfast at the Town and Country Hotel in Mission Valley.

The venue possessed an old-fashioned charm and opened its doors to a sea of pink comprised of event sponsors, such as Kaiser Permanente; local media personalities from KyXy and NBC7; breast cancer researchers and survivors; and, of course, the Philippine Nurses Association of San Diego County, (PNASD), Incorporated. PNASD President, Dr. Merlie Ramira; President-elect, Vivian Sanderlin; PNAA Executive Board and Board of Director, Vickie Berbano; Chona Lutap, Chair, Board of Directors; Cece Echon, Board of Director ; members Jemimah Olivar and Derek Velasquez, Southwestern College nursing students were seated at a table with breast cancer survivor, Chloe, who shared her personal story over a traditional breakfast. The morning’s festivities were greatly characterized by personal stories of heartbreaking loss, difficult struggle and inspirational hope. We listened to those who lost family members to breast cancer, those who were triumphant against the disease and those moved to create a positive difference in the ongoing battle.

This year, our participation in the walk will be lead by nursing student and new member, Jemimah Olivar, along with the assistance of fellow student and member, Derek Velasquez. In support of those of our great organization, both past and present, affected by breast cancer, it is our greatest hope that you will join the fight by accompanying us to walk on Sunday, October 18th! 3rd Semi-Annual Medical Device Packaging Conference
September 24-25, 2015

On Friday, September 25 at 8:45, PNASD will be participating in the  SMALL GROUP DISCUSSIONS: ANSWERING TO THE HEALTHCARE PROVIDER CONCERNS.
As the healthcare landscape navigates towards a patient-centric driven industry, it is more important than ever that medical device manufacturers produce products that fit seamlessly into this model. Oftentimes the deciding factor for devices selected ends with the nurse or clinician choosing the most appropriate product for the patient. Ease-of-use, sterilization abilities and historical success rates are just a few examples of the elements customers evaluate in choosing a medical device. By inviting nurses and other clinicians to lead small groups and analyze packaging from medical devices provided by conference attendees, engineers will have the unique and valuable opportunity to receive first-hand feedback from healthcare providers.

Hello Current Members of PNASD, we are issuing you a challenge!

This year of 2015, the PNASD is striving to gain at least 50 new members into the PNASD before the end of this year.

We are working toward our Association’s transition into a 503c tax status for our San Diego Chapter.   The PNASD accepts members who are of any race, color, religion, creed, gender, national origin, disability, marital or veteran status, or any other legally protected status.

We are strongly encouraging each of you to reach out to a minimum of TWO:

Co-workers   -   Colleagues   -   Nursing students   -   Retired nurses
  • Both non-Filipino and Filipino nurses
  • LVN – ADN  – BSN – MSN – Ph.D. – DNP status
  • Any field of nursing practice
  • Anywhere in San Diego County
Provide them a hard copy membership form or this PNASD website link and encourage them to join.

We want to see an increased number of members and for all members to volunteer, attend business meetings, join committees, and attend our functions throughout the year.

Please keep track of what nurses you refer.  A special treat will be given to the current PNASD member who recruits the most new members!

Thank you to everyone,
