Erlinda Mascardo, PNASD President, Crisabel Ramos, President-Elect and Cristina Escarilla, Chair of Education Committee represented the first delegates of PNASD to attend the first day of PNAA Convention, the Welcome Night.  The Welcome Night has a touch of Southern Style of beautiful costumes and sumptuous food, live entertainment by a folk singer singing songs in the 70’s.  Posters along the hallway showcased the PNAA’s past Presidents and their accomplishments that marked PNAA’s 40th Year Celebration.

July 25, 2019: Leadership Institute
Cece Echon, MSN, RN
PNASD Board of Director

The Leadership Institute Program was a huge success! The topics were relevant and practical in today’s climate and the speakers were phenomenal! As part of the audience, you can feel the enthusiasm and energy in the crowded room.
As a leader, I felt a clear sense of direction and paved way to understand, adjust my working relationship, and awareness of influencing various generations in the workplace.

July 25, 2019: Networking Night
Vivian Sanderlin, PHN, BSN, RN

PNASD Board of Director

The Networking night was an exciting event celebrating its theme “The Rich Legacy of Advocacy through the Years.” It was a night to join together, meet new members, build and renew friendships. The program started with the Parade of Banners for each chapter, the PNAA Foundation, Executive Board, Advisory Council and the host chapter, PNA Georgia. Dinner was served and each region presented their prepared short program skit. Mr. Jonathan Gecomo was the comedian emcee, spontaneous and funny who kept the program lively.

July 26, 2019: Education Day
Cris Escarrilla, MSN, BSN, RN
PNASD Chair of Education

The line-up of the educational topics and events surrounding the Education Day surpassed my expectations. The message from our current PNAA President Madelyn Yu outlining PNAA Advocacy through the Years bolstered my thoughts that this is an organization I am proud to be a part of. The keynote speaker, Dr. Ninfa Saunders’ story resonates deep down the challenges of career and family.

July 26, 2019: First Time Attendee
Commander Reggie Cagampan
PNASD Member

Philippine Nurses Association, San Diego (PNASD) was well represented during the PNAA’s 40th National Convention in Atlanta, Georgia held on July 24-28, 2019. PNASD had a total of 21 delegates including the three delegates who were attending for the first time.  I was one of the three ‘First attendee” from PNASD and it was such a pleasure and honor to experience the PNAA’s national convention. The speakers were high profile personalities with motivating and inspiring presentations. The story of their dedications and advocacies to make a difference, not only for the Filipinos but the whole community and the country, surely inspired and made every attendee feel proud of the successes of our Filipino nurses.

July 26, 2019: Stone Mountain Walk-up Trail, Dinner and Laser Show
Merlyn Foronda, BSN, RN, CCRN
PNASD Member

After an enriching education day, we went up to the Stone Mountain Park for a 5-mile hike/walk to the summit. We started the hike with a warm up Zumba exercise, then off we went for our walk/hike on our own pace. The hot weather made it a bit harder to hike the summit. While hiking, I met Betty Miranda, PNAA Past President. She was so proud to tell me that she is 82 years old. What an amazing woman! When we finally reached the top, we have a breathtaking view of the Atlanta skyline. We took the Summit sky ride going down and met with the rest of the group.

July 27, 2019: General Assembly
Erlinda Mascardo, BSN, RN, PHN
PNASD President

The 40th PNAA historic convention gathering of the Philippine Nurses Association of America (PNAA) in Atlanta, Georgia was exciting and memorable. We came together again, as one big family, to celebrate our many accomplishments and to show case our academic and creative talents. Our organization has grown to 52 strong chapters with over 5,000 accomplished members with diverse experiences.

July 27, 2019: “40 Shades of Red”
Lourdes DePerio, MSN, RN
PNASD Board of Director

It has been a fascinating four days at the Philippine Nurses Association of America (PNAA) national convention hosted by the Philippine Nurses Association of Georgia (PNAGA). As a tradition to culminate the PNAA convention, all the guests were invited to the Gala Awards dinner. The theme “40 Shades of Red” was such appropriate to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of PNAA. The guests strolled down the hall in red gowns, red ties and many shades of red. The Georgia Aquarium was the venue selected. It is the largest aquarium in the world and housed hundreds of different sea life species swimming in 10 million gallons of water, frolicking their multicolored bodies and different sizes.  This is such a picturesque background for photos, and entertainment as the guests enjoyed watching the creatures swam gracefully to the delight of everyone.

July 28, 2019: Picnic & Mass
Fe Delosreyes, MSN, BSN, RN
PNASD Treasurer

Every beginning has an ending, our last day at Atlanta, Georgia was on July 28, 2019. The PNA Georgia host chapter of the 40th PNAA National Convention capped the event with a Celebratory Mass and a Picnic at Our Sacred Heart of Jesus Church, a 5-minute walk from our venue.

Overall, it was an enjoyable experience, sharing it with friends from San Diego, meeting new and renewing friendship from other chapters. Thank you PNAA! Thank you, PNA Georgia for extending to us your Southern hospitality. See you all at the 41st PNAA National Convention in San Diego on July 1-5, 2020.

O' Farrell Charter School Annual Health Fair and Back to School Kickoff

Author: Britney Taganas

On August 10, 2019, PNASD attended the 7th annual Health fair and back to school kickoff event at O' Farrell Charter School. The event was hosted by Assembly member Shirley N. Weber and Senate President pro Tempore Toni Atkins.  It was a fun-filled day filled with health screenings (i.e. dental, vision, blood pressures, cholesterol, HIV, and glucose), educational activities, and free-giveaways (i.e. backpacks, school supplies). State and local officials attended and discussed about legislation and community issues.

President Erlinda Mascardo, Board of Director Cece Echon, Corresponding Secretary Britney Taganas, and PNASD member Brandee Hassell attended the community outreach event and represented PNASD by working the First Aid booth as well as screening blood pressures and providing cardiovascular health education to participants.

It was a great turn out and about 70 community members had their blood pressures screened. Many community connections were made with other organizations who served at the event.

PNASD SUMMER BEACH POTLUCK

Author: M. Balolong

What a wonderful day at the Silver Strand State Beach. The annual PNASD summer beach potluck was a great success. Everyone enjoyed delicious food combined with perfect weather. There were over 75 people in attendance. PNASD members, students, family and friends joined the fun and supported the event.

A variety of food was brought to the potluck. Some personal favorites included pancit, lechon kawali, lumpia, shrimp, salmon, pinakbet, camote, kangkong, chicken wings, salads, and plenty more.
Desserts included turon, bibingka, bilo-bilo, rice cakes, cupcakes, and plenty of sliced mangoes, watermelon, and cantaloupe. There was plenty of food to share - park employees even joined us for lunch.
Entertainment and activities came in a variety of forms. Guests were able to enjoy music, dancing, and games. Winners were rewarded for their efforts.

One game in particular really got the guests excited: the “Spin & Win” spinner game. Guests would spin the wheel and win a prize. Each spin was one dollar – this game earned PNASD a total of forty dollars!
Can’t wait for the next PNASD picnic!
