PNASD Supports San Diego Filipino American Humanitarian Foundation
By Vivian D. Sanderlin
Philippine Nurses Association of San Diego President Dr. Merlie Ramira, Board of Director Elvie Magsarili, Press Relations Officer Dorothy Brown and President-Elect Vivian Sanderlin attended the 24th Anniversary Heritage Gala of the San Diego Filipino American Humanitarian Foundation last November 14, 2015 at San Diego Marriott Hotel, Mission Valley California. The Foundation’s Gala theme was “Bridging Generations” headed by founders, Drs. Edwin and Barbara Yorobe. The Foundation was founded in 1991 by the doctors, a group of community leaders and successful business entrepreneurs who acquired the Lincoln Hotel in the Gaslamp district of the downtown area.  The hotel became the Filipino American archive center and today it is a Filipino library and museum that showcase the historical data and extraordinary accomplishments of the Filipino American community leaders of San Diego.  It also promotes Filipino American youth activities of the County.  The museum was visited by over 2500 visitors since it opened its doors. The Dr. Jose Rizal Center or Rizaliana room at the museum was established in the year 2005 that houses various books, manuscripts and poems authored by the Philippine National Hero, Dr. Jose Protacio Rizal.
The Gala event was an opportunity to celebrate the organization’s commitment to promote and preserve the history, heritage and culture of the Filipino American community. The program started with the entrance parade by special guest State Assemblyman Marty Block, San Diego County Supervisor Dave Roberts and other special guests.  A Welcome speech was presented by Dr. Barbara Yorobe. The Star Spangled Banner by Katriz Trinidad and Bayang Magiliw by Alessya Morales were sung perfectly.  During the program, there were 12 community organization awardees, 14 youth achiever awardees and many community service recipients. The lunch was served first with green salad; main viand was a serving of a choice between a tender flat iron steak and delicious mahi-mahi with steamed vegetables followed by tiramisu for dessert. There was an array of lined-up entertainment at the Gala such as an entourage of Kenneth Bailis Fashion Show of ladies and children wearing mostly ruffled beautiful gowns, A Fil- Am Youth achievers choral presentation, special performances of North and Southern Philippine dances by Samahan Company and public dancing to the tune of music provided by the Harana Band. For fund raising, the table centerpieces were sold for $15 each and 2016 Landscape calendars were available for the public to purchase. Overall, the event was a success. Dr. Ramira, Elvie and Vivian enjoyed the group line dance participation on the floor while Dorothy snapped pictures. Ms. Connie Leyva, a guest at the event willingly signed up and became a new member of our organization. Guests were encouraged to visit PNASD website to be members.  Once again, PNASD shined during the Philippine Heritage Gala!
