Discovering Total Self | Holistic Health Practitioner Training Program | Holistic Open House | Holistic Health - Single CoursesWorkshops Spiritual Director Diploma Program | Coaching Certificate ProgramNew Courses | Compassion Circle
November 2022 Newsletter
Take a deep breath and let your muscles relax with each breath. As the world continues its own dramas, from weather to war, remember that it is the stress of the world outside of yourself. Keep it there, outside of you. Let their stress not be internalized so that it becomes your stress. Breathe.

As we settle into our newly redefined space, we want to take this time to let you know about the upcoming courses and programs that begin this month with additional start dates in January. Spiritual Directors Program is changed only in so far as students may now JOIN at the start of each Unit. In January Unit 2 On Ritual, Ceremony and Divine Guidance begins and February 22nd, Unit 3 a Certificate program, begins as we explore end of life care and conscious dying. Holistic Program has a number of Single Courses available. The fee quoted here is for single course only. If you are registered in the program the fee is quite a bit less. Total Self starts on the week of November 7, 2023

The Compassion Circle this Friday November 11 will centre around the roles of grief and gratitude. As so many have been through losses whether from war, conflicts or pandemics, this ritual is ti find a place of peace within ourself. We hope you will join us at 7 PM in room 302. No cost but a donation is always appreciated.

Our Holistic Open House on November 18 from 6:30 PM to 9:30 PM is a chance to come out and hear a couple of mini-lectures and see demonstrations by faculty and senior students. See the school, meet some instructors, students and others interested in the field of Holistic Health. Pre-registration is appreciated. Just showing up is also a possibility.

How have we been affected by the Covid Pandemic? With the Covid-19 pandemic giving us some distance between it and us, scientists are beginning to look at how the pandemic has affected people world-wide. We have all been affected and may not even be aware of it. This is the first ever pandemic in which modern psychology is in a position to actually measure the effects. The last pandemic was the influenza back in 1918 and psychology was a fledgling new science. However, today psychology is having the opportunity to look at just how does a pandemic affect people. Natural disasters are usually fast and furious causing tremendous stressors and trauma
but are generally short lived, but this pandemic has been going for 3 years.

I thought it may be of interest as to what is being discovered. The pandemic changed the way we work, educate our kids, even see our doctor. The job market, housing, and entire industries changed. Our average life expectancy fell by nearly 3 years.

This is not hearsay but is the results from a major study* out of Florida State University with other major institutions. From previous pre-pandemic data and now post-pandemic data for comparison, it is showing there are declines in the following: extroversion, openness, agreeableness, and conscientiousness. The changes were about "one-tenth of a standard deviation," roughly the level of personality change you'd expect to see over a decade – not 2 years. A fifth trait, neuroticism, also increased in young adults.

There will likely be more things discovered as time goes on, but the changes are not necessarily permanent. We all have agency, the ability to make choices, and can decide what is good and what is not good for us. For instance, things to keep may be our increased hand washing and masking when we are sick. It has been nice not having a cold for almost 3 years!

Lockdowns have been a very life altering experience and as such a decline in extroversion is not much of a surprise. More people are staying in their homes and not socializing, not going to restaurants or clubs and this will affect our mental health as loneliness begins to take its toll. Another recent study long before the pandemic showed that loneliness is more detrimental to our health    than smoking every day, Did you know the UK Parliament has a Minister of Loneliness?

Given we will always have our ability to choose what works for us I hope we will consider that our decline in conscientiousness, openness and agreeableness do not seem beneficial to either ourself, our community or to society in general. Understanding they are due to our reactions to the pandemic perhaps we can come to terms with our inner experience of loss and fear and embrace kindness, openness and agreeableness in the days ahead. Remember where this newsletter started, let us not internalize the external dramas and stressors
around us.
Wishing you all health, prosperity and love.
