A new project by Huston & Company
Custom furniture designed for a distinctive library
For almost thirty years, Huston & Company has been crafting custom furniture for academic, public and private libraries throughout the United States.
This year, Huston & Company designed and built custom furnishings for several libraries, including the Lithgow Public Library in Augusta, Maine.
The Lithgow Library in Maine's capitol city of Augusta, was opened in 1896. It's a stately building, built in the Romanesque renaissance style with a granite exterior and numerous striking interior features such as grand fireplaces, stained glass windows, frescoes and gold leafed columns. It is on the National Register of Historic Places and is "considered one of the most beautiful interior spaces in the state of Maine." The Lithgow Library recently underwent a major renovation and addition, doubling the size of the library, restoring the original historic portions and adding a café as well as other new highlights.
Huston & Company was hired by Johnson Roberts Associates to build a suite of furnishings including some brand new designs and some reiterations of antique furnishings that would correspond with existing pieces still in use. The project included 27 carrels, 12 study tables, 2 large book displays, a lectern, a conference table and over 60 end panels and canopies.
The furniture for the children's room was built of maple while the furniture for adult and youth spaces is quarter-sawn white oak. Powder coated metal bases on the end panels add interest as well as durability; Marmoleum insets in many tabletops make for smooth writing and give the furniture greater longevity; glass dividers between carrels provide privacy while maintaining a light, open workspace. Metal shelving was provided by Tucker Library Interiors and Huston & Company designed end panels and canopies around their shelving specs.
The first official meeting about the project between Huston & Company and the architect was in September of 2015. Final design drawings were approved in February of 2016 and the furniture was installed five months later, in early July of 2016.
The result is an engaging mix of old and new, combining tradition of the past with amenities of today and into the future. The furnishings enrich the remarkable spaces skillfully enhanced and created by the architects.
Huston & Company furniture is handcrafted at their workshop in Kennebunkport, Maine. It is designed and built to withstand hard, regular use in public settings, lasting for generations while retaining its beauty and functionality. The beautiful furnishings in the Lithgow Library will serve library visitors for generations to come.
