Congratulations
2021 ILAC Award Recipients!
The purpose of the 2021 ILAC Awards is to help alleviate financial hardships exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic that IINSPIRE scholars are facing. This year, we were so moved by the vulnerability and transparency of the applicants’ responses that we decided to increase the award amount from $150 per student to $200!!! We could not have done this without the help of ILAC alumni, friends, family, and IINSPIRE campus directors. It's not too late to be an ILAC Sponsor to continue supporting our mission!

Traffic lights, refrigerated trucks, & home security system.
What do these have a common?

They were invented by Black men & women!

Home Security System, Co-Invented by Mary Van Brittan Brown in 1966

"Before security systems became a fixture in homes, an African American nurse Mary Van Brittan Brown, devised an early security unit for her own home. She spent many nights at home alone in Queens, New York while her husband was away, and felt unsafe with high rates of crime in her neighborhood. On top of that, police were unreliable and unresponsive. So she created a device that would help put her mind at ease."
