FeederWatcher Finds Endangered Species at Backyard Feeders

This past August, longtime FeederWatcher Charles Gehringer spotted a Red-cockaded Woodpecker at his home in Pinehurst, North Carolina. He has since seen as many as three coming to his suet feeder. Learn more about Charles' sightings of these endangered woodpeckers on our blog.

Online Data Entry Open

Online data entry is now open to participants registered for the coming season. If you have already signed up, you can add or edit count sites or view, enter, or revise data from past seasons in the Your Data section of the FeederWatch website (details below). Enjoy!

Data Entry Reminders for the New Season

Setting Up and Describing Count Sites

To make your bird counts as valuable for research as possible, it is important to describe your count site every year. Even if nothing has changed from one year to the next, the only way for researchers to know that nothing has changed is if you document it in the site description form. Thank you for taking the time to describe your count site; we appreciate it!

2016-17 News Note

New participants can plot their count site on our map by clicking on the Create, Edit, or Describe Your Count Site Location button on the Your Data home page on our website. Once your site is plotted, you will be taken to our site description form to enter information about your count site. If you are using the FeederWatch mobile app, you can describe your count site by clicking the "Create site description" icon in your count site box on the home screen.

Returning participants should set up a new count site location only if they are counting from a different location than they have in the past. Each season returning participants need to review their site description form and confirm that the information filled in previously is still accurate or make any needed revisions. You can access the form from the Manage/Edit Count Sites page in the Your Data section of the website by clicking the Create Description button at the bottom of the box with your site name (shown below) or by clicking the link in the pink alert that will display on the Your Data home page once you enter your first count. If you are using the FeederWatch mobile app, you can confirm or revise your count site description by clicking the "Confirm site description" icon in your count site box on the home screen.

Renaming or Correcting the Location of a Site

2016-17 News Note
On the Manage/Edit My Count Sites page in the Your Data section of our website, you can correct the location of any site by following the Edit Placement link at the bottom of the box for your site. You can rename a site or correct the town and state listed for a site by clicking the "more" link in the same box. At this time these changes can only be made through the Your Data section of our website, not in the mobile app. Please do not create a new count site unless you are counting from a new location.

Submit Data for Past Seasons

All participants registered for the coming season can submit data for any past season through the Your Data section of our website. If you haven't submitted your counts from last season, or if you discover FeederWatch counts from the past that you never entered, click on the Enter Bird Counts button and then click on the link that says "Need to enter data for a previous season?" The link is found on the right just above the calendar you use to select a count date.

View or Edit Your Historical Data

2016-17 News Note
You can view or edit any of your past data on our website by clicking on the View or Edit My Previous Counts button on the Your Data home page. Click on the drop-down menu with a set of years displayed to select any past season when you submitted data. To view or edit one of your counts, click the Actions button under the count date. To see a list of all the species you have reported along with the percent of your counts and nearby counts that have included that species, click on the "Site List Interactive" button near the bottom of the Your Data home page. You also can click the "Explore and Download Your Personal Data" button to see your data displayed in different visual formats. Click the tabs at the top of that page to see trend graphs of your data or to download your data.

If you are using the mobile app, tap the "Review Previous Counts" button under the relevant count site to see all of the counts you have submitted for that site. Tap a row to view the Count Summary, and then tap "Edit" if you need to make any edits. Click the "Site List" button to see a list of all the species you have reported along with the percent of your counts and nearby counts that have included that species.
