These Supplements Help Keep Your Body in Motion

Physical activity provides long-term benefits for health and wellness. According to the Council for Responsible Nutrition (CRN), dietary supplements are among the many components to staying active as you age.

Three dietary supplements that may be particularly helpful to keep the body in motion are protein, glucosamine/chondroitin and ginseng.

Protein is critical for the body’s muscles to function, especially as one ages. "What many people don’t know is that protein supplements can play an important role in healthy aging because they can help preserve skeletal muscle mass in the elderly," according to Duffy MacKay, N.D., senior vice president, scientific and regulatory affairs, CRN. Three common types of protein are whey, soy and rice. Whey proteins are dairy byproducts, so vegan protein supplements, such as soy, rice and pea, may be more appropriate for those with dairy allergies or dietary preferences.

Another consequence of aging is joint pain, which can be a cause of immobility for many. Glucosamine/chondroitin is a supplement with a long track record of safely helping provide relief for people with joint discomfort. A new study published in the Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases found glucosamine chondroitin to be effective in helping people with knee osteoarthritis and severe pain.

Finally, all bodies need energy to move. Ginseng, a herbal supplement, traditionally has been used to support healthy energy levels. This adaptogenic herb can be used to help the body find balance, whether from stress, fatigue or another outside factor, according to MacKay.

Whether it's protein, glucosamine/chondroitin, ginseng or another vitamin or herb, dietary supplements are only part of the overall path to health and can be incorporated in a daily regimen along with other healthy habits.

People’s health needs differ widely, so it’s wise to talk with a doctor or other health care practitioner about the specific dietary supplements that will work for you.

FDA Rules Require Manufacture Dates on Supplement Labels

Editor’s Note: This notice was first published in the May 2014 ALTRUM News. Because a number of Dealers have been asking questions about this, the article is reprinted below.

FDA regulations for Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) require labels on dietary supplement products display a “manufacture date” rather than an “expiration date.”

To remain in compliance with the latest FDA regulations, all ALTRUM nutritional supplement labels will list a manufacture date rather than an expiration date. There have been no changes to ALTRUM supplements.

Each batch of the ALTRUM products is rigorously tested to verify quality and potency.

ALTRUM nutritional supplements should be stored in a cool, dry place out of sunlight and with the lid tightly closed.

As a general recommendation, most ALTRUM supplements are best if used within 36 months.

VisionPower, Ultra Daily Enzymes, Daily Enzyme Support and Ultra Probiotics are best used within 18 months of the manufacture date. These products can be refrigerated to extend shelf life.

Longevity Enzymes and Nutritional Drink Mix are best when used within 24 months.

These estimates are conservative for the industry. Dealers and customers can be confident ALTRUM products are high quality, and they remain effective throughout the recommended product-use period.
