Boost Brain Power With the Right Foods

Consuming a healthy diet is good for weight management and for preventing a variety of chronic health issues. However, the food you eat also is integral to boosting your brain power. Research is showing that certain foods can help sustain healthy brain function.

Here are three ways to supplement your diet naturally to improve memory, alertness and cognition.

  • B vitamins, especially vitamin B-6 and B-12, are important for maintaining brain health. Most people notice changes in their memory as they age. Healthy doses of B vitamins can help create the internal environment in your body to improve overall memory functions.

B vitamins are abundant in foods such as spinach, broccoli, beans, peanuts, asparagus, corn, citrus fruits and beef liver.

  • Antioxidants aid learning, remembering and using knowledge. If you want to improve your overall cognitive function, foods rich in antioxidants can help give you optimal brain power.

Antioxidants are abundant in dark fruits and vegetables. Some of the foods that can help improve cognition are blueberries, strawberries, plums, wild blueberries, apples and dried kidney beans.

  • Omega-3 fatty acids help keep you alert. Consume cold-water, oily fish at least three times a week, and you’ll find that it’s easier to remain alert throughout the day.

Fish is a great source of omega-3, but other foods also can give the brain an omega-3 boost. Cauliflower, flax seeds, Brussels sprouts, beef and tofu are non-fish alternatives for omega-3 fatty acids.

While these foods provide a boost to the brain, they also provide supportive nutrition for the whole body to help you stay healthy and happy.

You Can Change Your Risk for Heart Disease

Heart disease is the leading cause of death for men and women in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control. Several types of heart conditions are included in the term “heart disease.” The most common type of heart disease is coronary artery disease, which can cause heart attack, angina, heart failure and arrhythmias. Several risk factors increase the chances a person will develop heart disease. Read about these risk factors and choices you can make to safeguard your good health in the August issue.
