Probiotics Benefit Digestion, Immune Health

As attention increases on the vital role digestive health plays in overall health, more consumers are buying probiotics. The U.S. probiotics market was $9.8 billion at the end of 2014 and will grow to $15.1 billion by 2019, according to Nutrition Business Journal

“There is an increasing interest in probiotic interventions,” wrote the authors of one of the most recent studies, a meta-analysis of previous research in a recent issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association. Those researchers found that probiotics were particularly useful against a common gastrointestinal problem: antibiotic-associated diarrhea (AAD). But studies show that probiotics can help with a great deal more — warding off infection and boosting immune systems, along with other benefits that are still under preliminary study, according to an article in the Huffington Post in early January 2015.*

The word “probiotic” is a compound of two Greek words: “pro,” to signify promotion of and “biotic,” which means life. The World Health Organization defines a probiotic as any living microorganism that has a health benefit when ingested. Similarly, the USDA defines a probiotic as “any viable microbial dietary supplement that beneficially affects the host.”

A recent study by JAMA shows probiotics can be particularly helpful for people who have undergone treatment with antibiotics which are designed to kill destructive, illness-causing bacteria. Antibiotics not only kill the bad bacteria, they often wipe out the beneficial intestinal flora that helps the body digest food and strengthens the immune system, according to researchers.

Multi-strain probiotic supplements can be especially effective in helping improve the digestive system. In fact, according to Dr. Zoltan P. Rona, the immune system becomes weakened without probiotics in multiple strains. Rona is a graduate of McGill University Medical School (1977), and carries a Master’s Degree in Biochemistry and Clinical Nutrition from the University of Bridgeport in Connecticut (1984).

“In order for a probiotic to be effective, it must contain a varied number of strains as each strain is responsible for a different function,” according to Rona.

FDA Rules Require Manufacture Dates on Supplement Labels

Editor’s Note: This notice was first published in the May 2014 ALTRUM News. Because a number of Dealers have been asking questions about this, the article is reprinted below.

FDA regulations for Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) require labels on dietary supplement products display a “manufacture date” rather than an “expiration date.”

To remain in compliance with the latest FDA regulations, all ALTRUM nutritional supplement labels will list a manufacture date rather than an expiration date. There have been no changes to ALTRUM supplements.

Each batch of the ALTRUM products is rigorously tested to verify quality and potency.

ALTRUM nutritional supplements should be stored in a cool, dry place out of sunlight and with the lid tightly closed.

As a general recommendation, most ALTRUM supplements are best if used within 36 months.

VisionPower, Ultra Daily Enzymes, Daily Enzyme Support and Ultra Probiotics are best used within 18 months of the manufacture date. These products can be refrigerated to extend shelf life.

Longevity Enzymes and Nutritional Drink Mix are best when used within 24 months.

“These estimates are conservative for the industry,” said ALTRUM Manager Margit Gilbertson. “This way our Dealers and customers can be confident that ALTRUM products are high quality, and they remain effective throughout the recommended product-use period.”

2014 Vegetable Productivity Study Available

AGGRAND annually conducts a comparison study in its growth plots. In 2014, AGGRAND personnel planted tomatoes and onions for the study.

The AGGRAND 2014 Vegetable Productivity Study (G3322) documents the growing season from planting seeds of these two crops in three sets of plots that were fertilized with AGGRAND fertilizers, a popular competitor’s fertilizer and control plots that received only water.

The 2014 growth plot studies revealed that the AGGRAND fertilization program, when compared to a leading organic fertilizer and the control plot, increased vegetable yield in terms of number and total weight. Also, the average weight and size of the AGGRAND vegetables showed an advantage over the produce grown in the control and competitor plots.

Analysis of the soil showed that the AGGRAND system enhances the soil environment and provides necessary nutrients. The competitive fertilizer did not enhance the soil environment.
