THANK YOU SO MUCH
It takes a village to raise a child, and for the kids of Dixon, their village just got bigger.

Whether you ran, walked, raised funds, donated, shared on social media, or any combination of these things, THANK YOU!

Thanks to you, Dixon will be able to continue to offer the child support program and all of the children who come through our doors will be able to find the care and support they need.

Children who grow up happy and healthy, and learn how to build relationships and express their emotions in a healthy and respectful way, are key to breaking the cycle of violence. Thank you for making these children a priority.

Thanks so much to our friends at Forge Health for their support and energy during this fundraising campaign, and a big thank you to Forge Physiotherapist Marina for helping some of our Dixon staff runners have a fantastic race as well!

HOUSE NEEDS
In-kind donations are incredibly valuable for the work that we do. The women and children at Dixon are currently looking for:
  • Household cleaning supplies for outreach care package (dish soap, sponge, paper towel, etc.)
  • Kids toothbrushes and toothpaste
  • Facial creams and lotions
We're also always looking for gift cards for grocery stores, gas, and household appliances and furniture.

Gift cards give women the freedom to choose the products that are best for themselves and their families.

Affordable places like Superstore and Walmart allow women to make the most out of the cash on the card, as well as shop for different kinds of items (like groceries and household supplies) in one place.

INCREASING AWARENESS
In addition to providing support services for women and children fleeing violence, it's our mission to raise awareness about the issue and impacts of violence against women. In this new section of our newsletter, we'll be sharing what's happening in the world of our work.

Dixon turned away 1,493 women and children due to lack of space last year

As women stay longer in our transitional housing programs due to lack of safe and affordable housing, we have had to turn away other women and children who need access to safety.

Accessing safe and affordable housing is essential to breaking the cycle of abuse, especially here in the Lower Mainland where housing costs can be a prohibitive economic barrier.

This is why we are so excited to partner with the Province of British Columbia to build 20 new affordable rental homes in Burnaby for women and children fleeing violence.

We are also eager to work with the City of Burnaby to move this project forward by finding a site for these critically needed rental homes.

BC government announces 2,300 new child care spaces

We're glad to see the Government of BC making childcare a priority. We know that when women have access to affordable childcare, they are free to pursue their education, work and break out of poverty. Economic independence is key to women’s safety.

We look forward to working with the City of Burnaby to build the above mentioned 20 new units of affordable rental homes, but we also recognize the importance of child care in women's safety and ending the cycle of abuse. That in mind, we also hope to be able to work with the City of Burnaby and the Ministry of Children and Family Development to create much-needed childcare spaces for women and children fleeing violence in Burnaby.
