Expanded Roles for Two Sylvester Manor Team Members
Two valued members of the Sylvester Manor team are assuming new roles this year. Donnamarie Barnes will be moving from part time to full time in the position of Archivist/Curator, and Andrew Porzio will be staying on in the capacity of Livestock and Resource Manager.

Donnamarie, a former photo editor at People magazine, has long been associated with the Manor as a docent. During the summer, her responsibilities expanded to include cataloging and archiving the contents of the Manor house as well as organizing and inventorying the vault. She  made several exciting (and fun!) discoveries as she plumbed the depths of boxes, drawers, file cabinets, and trunks.

Donnamarie has also been taking online courses in archival management and interfacing with the professional staff at the Fales Library at NYU, the repository of the Manor's print archives. She will be responsible for all the programs and activities in the Heritage realm.

Andrew has been with us for 10 months, first as a farm apprentice and later this summer as Co-Manager of the Windmill Field. A graduate of Paul Smith's College in the Adirondacks with a B.S. degree in Natural Resource Management and Policy, Andrew has been growing vegetables in one capacity or another since he was a child and brings over five years of horticulture, greenhouse, and farm plant care experience to the Manor.

He and Windmill Field Manager Jocelyn Craig will be responsible for our farm operations. Jocelyn will oversee the planning, planting, and harvesting of the Windmill Field, the management and interface with the CSA, as well as hiring our 2017 crew. Andrew will handle all livestock (chickens, goats, and pigs), equipment oversight, land management projects in and around the Windmill Field, and school program visits.

Gratitude and Good Times Abound at 64th Annual Tea & Tree

We kicked off the holiday season by expressing our gratitude to members and volunteers at the 64th Annual Tea and Tree. Held in the historic parlors of the Manor house, this tradition-filled Yuletide celebration incorporated treasures from Sylvester Manor's collection.

Tea was served from our antique silver tea services and accompanied by homemade cookies and treats. Rooms decorated in color themes sparkled with lights, Christmas trees, and decorations. Tom and Lisa of Shelter Island entertained guests by filling the house with holiday songs, a cheerful way to herald in the season.

Did you know that Schmidt's Market in Southampton now carries fresh eggs from Sylvester Manor Farm chickens (known as "the happiest chickens on earth")? You can also purchase them from The Gatehouse porch for $7 a dozen.
Joyful Gathering at December Gleaning
The Windmill Field experienced its first hard freeze the evening before the gleaning; a gentle reminder that the growing season is indeed over. It was a joy to see community members of all ages rushing to pull up the last of the leeks, exclaiming over the mizuna and parsley, and forking candy-sweet carrots from the frozen ground.
Thank you to everyone who braved the cold to share in the experience. You are part of the reason why we farmers love what we do!
