The club has been very fortunate of late where exactly one week ago we had another two Premiership wins that being the Under 19s Division 1 and Division 3 sides. The Division 3 side played against Parkside out at Garvey Oval Parade on Saturday whereas the Division 1 side played at Trevor Barker oval against Mazenod O.C. They were both two triumphant wins, and as a club we couldn't be more proud of the players, coaches, and all involved.

U19s Division 1 Review

"Heading into the final series was a nerve-racking time, mainly due to the fortunate situation of ending the season with 1 loss. Whilst nerve racking the coaching staff had belief in the team as they had done all the hard work since mid-October 2021. We had trained and implemented everything we had learnt over the years from some very talented people, whilst putting our tweaks into the plan.

The 2nd Semi-final against our archrival Beaumaris being played on the home deck was going to be a challenge, the boys stood up and from a coach’s perspective the team did everything well, this earnt us a spot directly into the Grandfinal. As coaches we couldn’t have been prouder of their efforts.
The Grandfinal weekend seemed so close but so far away and the weeks seemed to drag, but here it is. A captains run Friday night, then the Div 1 playing group and coaches travelled out to Garvey Oval on Saturday morning to watch a thriller from our Div 3 team in a 1-point win to take out the honours, now the nerves and pressure was on, and I think we all felt it.
Sunday morning arrived and I am sure many didn’t sleep the best, the boys arrived as per our normal structure and set up, nothing changed. Music pumping, rolling, stretching, coaches finalising the day, lots of hugging, high fiving, back slapping etc. The message was clear, we have done all the hard work leading up to this game and now it is time to stay focused and do the little things well and remember this is about TEAM.

Start time was close a few little minor adjustments, the final words were “ Today is not only about you it is about all of those that have helped us get here, and those that are looking down on us, and those that can’t make it today, this is about our brotherhood that you built and the single focus is TEAM and TEAM only, selfishness won’t cut it, play your role and play your role well”. We were minutes away and the boys did their count down, a coached turned the count down music off by mistake which upset the boys, time to run out.
My nerves were settled, line coaches had everything under control, players were switched on we were ready to rock. First qtr. the signs were good, ball movement,  structures, set ups everything we have learnt and worked on over the years was coming together. Qtr. time came and the message was clear and the same, “ do the small things well reward your teammates”. Second qtr. Started and the boy started exactly were they left off, ball movement, composure, structure, team, discipline, to watch this unfold was like a proud parent moment, I thought they are doing everything we had worked on and talked about and what was interesting to me we kicked 5.3 in the first qtr. and 5.3 in the second.

Half time came and the message was don’t be complacent, no arrogance, do the small things well, TEAM and good teams continue and run the game out, they show the opposition respect. The boys went from strength to strength and never stopped right to the final siren, which is a testament to their character. As coaches you couldn’t have asked for a better finish to a game or a season.  Every line was phenomenal, the backline only conceded 40 points in the 2 finals games, the midfield ran and created the opportunities around the ground racking up possession after possession and the forwards kicked 29 out of the 38 goals, with the remaining coming from the Mids.
I would like to thank, line coaches Steve, Ev,  Adrian, Scott, Gerry, Team Manager Sue, under 19’s legend Tommy Brain, Tighe , sponsors and the committee and everyone else who has contributed this successful year, Thank you.

It is time to rest and reflect on what an amazing year this has been!!!!!!

U19s Division 3 Review

Coming off a fantastic win in our Preliminary Final against a Red Hot favourite in Preston Bullants this installed inner belief that we could do something special in our upcoming Grand Final vs Parkside.
With the rain belting down over night and expected wet & slippery conditions at Garvey Oval Parade my confidence rose as I knew we would be quicker and better at ground level than a taller and bigger bodied opponent in Parkside.
From the 1st bounce we played a committed and physical brand of footy that stunned Parkside (who had beaten us comprehensively by 40 points 2 weeks prior in heavier conditions) as he we hit the scoreboard early via a Matt Denny snap on goal and continued to pepper the goals in the 1st quarter and kept Parkside scoreless to take a 10 point lead (1.4. 10 to 0.0.0).
Parkside increased their efforts in the 2nd quarter and kicked two quick goals before we started to gain control of the footy and tempo of the game to kick a goal late via Lachlan Cowell to give us the lead going into half time 2.7.19 to 2.2.14.
At half time the emphasis was to back our fitness and running capacity to run over the top of them and to continue our pressure and tackling heat at every contest.
Lead by Noah Hughes in the centre our mids started to run and spread and provided our forwards with quicker entries allowing Trent Meakins (1 goal) and Liam Bowles (2 goals) capitalising in front of goal to give us a handy lead going into ¾ time break by 15 points.
Heading into the final quarter and the game on the line we knew Parkside would come out hard and that they did with our defenders doing an amazing job to defend in the opposition forward 50 for almost 20 minutes smothering, tackling, bumping and getting back to support each other with no panic.
As they say “poor kicking on goal” is ‘poor footy” with Parkside kicking 1.7 in the final quarter.  We finally got the ball to our wing with a clearance from deep defence and managed to get the ball out to Kyden Vella through the centre who took off towards our goal with no opposition in front of him.. one bounce, two bounces, three bounces … then the umpires whistle goes off  (thinking he has run too far) but to alert us the siren had gone.
Hysteria and excitement then takes over from our strong St Bedes crowd swarm the oval to embrace all the players and coaches as we held on by the barest of margins of 1 point to win our Division 3 Grand final 5.8.38 to 4 .13.37.
It was an absolute phenomenal performance by all 24 players who made the commitment to believe and trust each other and more importantly to prove that in Grand Finals all previous results mean nothing.
With Noah Hughes being judged Best on Ground and Co Captains Cody Squires, Koen Chandler and Jack Wynd we raised the Premiership Cup to celebrate and an amazing Grand Final win and the start of something special over the weekend.
A massive thank you to Paul Devitt (Assistant) and our Division 1 Coaches Caine Groves, Scott Duthie, Steve Taylor, Adrian Hale & Evan Ryder for giving up your time to help (with your GF the following day) and to all the supporters who made the long journey and made this win so special .. “Anytime anywhere”.

BRING ON 2023!

The club would like to formally announce that 2022 Senior men's coach Steve D'Andrea will continue on in his current role at the club, building on the growth of this season, which was significantly hampered by long term injuries to the number of our key players.   Introducing 12 of our talented Under 19 players to senior football this season is something that is so important going forward, and Steve is driven to develop all of our senior men's and Under 19's players to strive for long-term success in the coming years.

We are excited with where the club is at present, and along with Steve's appointment, there will be further coaching announcements in the coming weeks in both junior and senior ranks.   This will provide all our junior boys and girls, and senior men's and women's teams with the level of expertise required to develop our players both on and off the field, to be the best that they can be.
