Mandatory Gear lists
The Motatapu mandatory gear list contains what we believe is the absolute minimum to keep you safe in the alpine environment. The weather is very unpredictable in the high country, a front can blow in and out of the mountains in less than 12 hours. It has been both sweltering hot and freezing cold in this area during March so you should be well prepared with all the necessary gear for all conditions, including snow, due to the high elevation of this event.
All competitors must carry the mandatory gear at all times during race day. No mandatory gear = no start!
More info for the different events click here
Bike checks are compulsory for all Mountain Bike competitors. NO BIKE, HELMET & TOOL KIT CHECK = NO START!
Bike checks can be completed between now and 5:00pm Thursday 4 March 2021. Once your bike check is completed and the Bike Store registers the outcome with us and your completed check will show on the start list, it may take up to 48 hours for the check to show online - Start list here
Bike and tool kit checks are free of charge and should take no more than 10 minutes, unless something requires further attention.

The Mountain Bike and Off-Road Marathon
events have four self-service Aid Stations evenly spaced along the course. Aid Stations will have water, PURE electrolyte hydration drink (orange flavour), a supply of OSM bars in a variety of flavours. Please note that the Aid stations are predominantly for our marathon runners who cannot carry all their supplies. Mountain bikers should carry enough to get them to the finish line but are welcome to pick up extras if needed.
The Miners Trail
has a water station at the 3km mark and an Aid Stations located at the 6.5km mark. The Aid stations will have water, PURE electrolyte hydration drink(orange flavour) and a supply of OSM bars.
The Ultra Run
has four checkpoints.
Checkpoints A & B will have water and a small quantity of PURE electrolyte hydration drink (orage flavour).
Checkpoints C & D will have food such as cake, sandwiches (cheese, peanut butter, Nutella), chips, pretzels, oranges, boiled salted potatoes and OSM bars. Athletes must still bring their own nutrition as per the mandatory gear list.
**Please note: While we are there to help, please ensure you carry enough food and drink to get you through your race.
