A Glance Back at January

  • Jan 8th Open League Tournament:  We were blown away to have 250 teams compete during the first week of the New Year! A major highlight was guest speaker, John M. Bredehoft, two time winner of the TOC and Winner of the NDT.  He shared his journey from high school debate in the Bronx to Harvard Law School!
  • Jan 16th Youth Leader Meeting: In addition to their volunteer work, our Youth Leaders participate in skills workshops offered by the league. This month's topic was “How To Be Successful in a First Job." 🤓
  • Jan 17th MLK Workshop:  Our Title One school teams gathered for a debate fundamentals workshop followed by a full league viewing and discussion of "Boy King." We love to spend holidays with our debaters!
  • Jan 26th District 7 Tournament:  This exclusive tournament was only for debaters who compete on our teams in District 7 in the South Bronx. We're proud of all District 7's teams including their robust elementary division- starting them early!
  • Jan 27th Legal Advisory Council Meeting: We had the first meeting for all committed members of our inaugural Legal Advisory Council. We couldn't be more excited to start working with this team of generous, engaged lawyers on ways to support our debaters.
  • Jan 29th MSQI Tournament: Just a casual 500 middle school students competing online during the bomb cyclone? You better believe it! We were thrilled to host 450 rounds of debate for 250 excited teams (including 12 bi-lingual teams). Thank you to our partners at MSQI for an incredible day!

Meet Amienata

School: Mott Hall 3

What do you love most about your debate team? The amount of respect everybody has for one another and the amount of cooperation that occurs.

Why is being part of the NYCUDL important to you? The NYCUDL gives me many opportunities and exposes me to a lot of diversity amongst my peers.

Fun Fact: I'm the only person at my school who spells "Amienata" the way I do—with an "i" and an "e!"
Amienata was the first place speaker out of over 150 students at our District 9 Debut Tournament. We're so proud of her accomplishment!
