HERE Center Weekly
July 20, 2021
Edition 33
The HERE Center is a university-chartered center at California State University, Northridge (CSUN) dedicated to community-partnered participatory research. Located in CSUN’s first research building, Lilac Hall, the center was chartered in 2019 with the goal of institutionalizing and accelerating the university’s health disparities research through dedicated campus resources, community affiliations, and joint activities with research partners. We seek and initiate cooperative research projects targeting local health issues.

HERE Center Newsletter - Bi-weekly Release

Hello all!

Starting this week, we will release our center newsletters following a bi-weekly schedule.

Thank you!

Student Champions for Climate Justice - On the News!

Two of our interns, Hayley Diep and Hanli Su, were featured on APHA’s The Nation’s Health. In particular, they were featured for their recent virtual community panel tackling the gas leaks at the San Fernando Valley storage sites and how they compromise community health equity.

“We hope to continue to host more panel discussions like this one to keep the community informed, engaged and inspired to take action. Together, we can prevent more natural gas disasters from occurring and hold private companies and officials responsible for their actions,” the interns said.

Petition - Diversify CSUN Professors

Colored Minds, inc. is holding a Change.org petition to diversify the CSUN faculty. According to them, the university is responsible for developing the minds of racial-ethnic minorities that will become leaders in communities and cities. Without a complete opportunity to learn about the chosen fields from someone with a lived experience of what it means to be a racial-ethnic minority in the United States, there is an extreme disservice being done to racial-ethnic minority students, as well as racial majority students.

This is especially true considering that representation influences how racial-ethnic minorities see themselves and how they are viewed by society. CSUN students will only have a fully informed and well-rounded education if we have more diverse perspectives available to learn from. We demand more of these crucial voices to be added to our tenure and tenure-track faculty.

Sign the petition here.

COVID-19 Announcements
To better track COVID-19's impact on a local level, CSUN geography professor and HERE Center cartographer Steven Graves created interactive maps that track the virus' progress county by county on the national level. To view these maps, click in the link above.

COVID-19: Statewide Vulnerability and Recovery Index

The Index uses ZIP Code-level data to identify California communities most in need of immediate and long-term pandemic and economic relief. Policymakers and community stakeholders should use it to determine where to target interventions.

Specifically, the Index is comprised of three components — Risk, Severity, and Recovery Need with the last scoring the ability to recover from the health, economic, and social costs of the pandemic. Communities with higher Index scores face a higher risk of COVID-19 infection and death and a longer uphill economic recovery. Conversely, those with lower scores are less vulnerable.

You can access the index w/ the interactive map here.

Mask Mandate is back in L.A.

Starting last Saturday, Los Angeles County residents were required to wear masks in all indoor public settings, regardless of their vaccination status.

The mask mandate comes amid a spike in coronavirus cases and hospitalizations in the region. Health officials say the county has been seeing “alarming trends of increased community spread” after reporting more than 1,000 daily new cases for several consecutive days.
