A Silicon Valley Leadership Group Update: July 2018
- AROUND THE LEADERSHIP GROUP -

We’re #1! YES on Statewide Props 1 and 2 on November 6

The Leadership Group's #1 priority in the second half of 2018 is co-leading the $4 billion Veterans and Affordable Housing Bond Act to victory. Last week, we were officially assigned statewide Proposition 1 for the November 6 ballot!

Additionally, we are excited to announce that our campaign is also leading the No Place Like Home ballot initiative (Proposition 2) placed on the ballot by the Legislature and Governor at the end of June.

Together, YES on Props 1 and 2 will provide much-needed funding for affordable homes for veterans, working families, people with disabilities and Californians experiencing homelessness.

Innovation Economy Dinner
On June 18th, we brought together 35 executives across different industry sectors and seven community college districts for face-to-face conversations about training and direct hire opportunities. Our annual Innovation Economy Dinner is a key part of the Community College to Career (CC2C) initiative, whose goal is to build a strong, diverse pool of local talent for the innovation economy, and grow our middle class. Last year's dinner prompted new private-sector funding for regional industry-community college alignment, and initiated work-based learning opportunities for area community college students. To learn more about CC2C, contact David Palter at dpalter@svlg.org.
Local Government Day
Fremont, Newark, and Union City
We were excited to continue our Local Government Day series on Wednesday, June 27th with the cities of Fremont, Newark, and Union City. The meeting began with a brief presentation on the Silicon Valley Competitiveness and Innovation Project (SVCIP) by the Leadership Group SVP, Brian Brennan and continued into a roundtable local policy discussion with Mayor Lily Mei, Mayor Alan Nagy, City Manager Tony Acosta, Councilmember Rick Jones, and Director of Economic & Community Development Joan Malloy. Special thanks to our host, Electronics For Imaging, Inc.
Working Council Guest Speaker
San Mateo County Board of Supervisors President, Dave Pine was our June Working Council guest speaker. The supervisor congratulated the Leadership Group on the success of the RM3 campaign before giving our membership an update on Peninsula Clean Energy and its role in helping achieve local climate action goals.

It is with great pleasure that we introduce this year's Celebration of Diversity- Dreamers, Doers & Defenders. This exciting new event is a chance to celebrate those immigrants who have made incalculable contributions to Silicon Valley and America's innovation economy through their creativity, ingenuity, passion, and focus on the greater good.

Through this heart-warming and uplifting event on Thursday, August 23, we will highlight immigrants with invaluable roles as entrepreneurs, employers, employees, and exponents while celebrating the openness and innovation at the core of our American identity.

Nearly half of America's Fortune 500 Companies are currently run by an immigrant CEO or a child of an immigrant.  Here in Silicon Valley alone, more than half of the engineers fueling our innovation economy were not born in the United States. This evening celebration spotlights the vital role that people from around the world have played to strengthen our economy, communities, and companies in Silicon Valley, the earth's epicenter of innovation.

Join us as we celebrate these stories - which, collectively, are Silicon Valley's story.
