Pre-festival Masterclasses

Class numbers will be limited to give attendees a great experience with these wonderful presenters, so if something appeals to you, get in early!

Write to Rise with Áine Tyrrell

A songwriting masterclass giving women all the permissions and the rights to hold the pen and express themselves through songwriting.

"Women's stories and voices are finally being heard, believed, and are a changing force in the foundations of what we know as society and culture. Yet, only 12.3 percent of songwriters of the 600 most popular songs of the last six years were written by women.
Expressing the things we cannot express through words can be a form of therapy not only for each woman in the workshop personally as she develops her songwriting skills, but also for the community as the song is sung out".

Mission Songs Project with Jessie Lloyd

Jessie Lloyd has spent much of her time in recent years researching and collecting great songs from the time of the Aboriginal Missions around Australia

In this masterclass Jessie will teach some of the songs and their background from her research and the attendees will be invited to joining Jessie in special performances during the festival weekend

Everything about slide guitars with Lucky Oceans

Lucky will trace the evolution of the slide guitar, from a simple acoustic guitar with strings raised above the fretboard played with a knife, to the complexities of the modern pedal steel guitar.  Starting with the G and D tunings, the basis of Blues and Early Hawaiian music, Lucky will illustrate what can be done with these tunings and then explain what and why new tunings and guitar designs were developed.

He will cover left and right hand techniques and principles for the slide guitar and will explain the reasoning behind the construction of the pedal steel guitar.  He will illustrate the different styles of different schools of playing and some of his own innovations.  You may bring your own instruments and Lucky will be able to answer individual questions.

Irish Fiddle with Rob Zielinski

Rob has spent much of his life learning from several masters of traditional Irish music and is now considered one of the finest exponents of the style in Australia.

In this masterclass Rob will teach the principal of  "The Floating Bow". Attendees will also learn some of Mick Doherty tunes: bowing, ornamentation and approach.
