INTRODUCING…IN A CRAB SHELL

With nearly half the undergraduate population of Maryland enrolled at 16 colleges, on 23 campuses and 1000+ locations, it can be challenging to capture and share all that’s happening at Maryland’s community colleges.

However, starting this month, we are going to try.

Similar to the more well-known phrase, in a nutshell -- In A Crab Shell will provide a concise, bi-monthly discussion of issues important to higher education and the State of Maryland.

What is Dual Enrollment?

Dual enrollment programs allow students to enroll in college while still enrolled in high school. They are sometimes called other names, such as “early college access” programs.

How does Dual Enrollment Help Students?

Students obtain free or discounted college credit (25%, 50%, or 100% off 4 courses)
Students are more prepared for college, both academically and socially
Students are more likely to complete college

Who is Dual Enrollment Good For?

Any student can benefit, but research shows dual enrollment programs can be especially beneficial to struggling students.

A 6-year study following over 32,000 Texas high school students found that:

Students who took college courses while in high school were significantly more likely to complete an Associate degree, or higher, within 6 years, regardless of prior academic standing.
Students from low-income families were significantly more likely to attend a 4-year college following participation in a dual enrollment program.
