Welcome to the SOS
November Newsletter!

With November nearly over - we would like to keep you all updated on what we have been up to.

There's a lot to read in this newsletter. So grab a cuppa and read about the upcoming SOS Ladies Christmas Lunch and the Christmas Bazaar at Secret Garden, the SOS Annual General Meeting and our new Board, plus the new SOS website.  There's also an update on our FeedSamui and Community Gardens initiatives, details of upcoming events, some gift ideas, plus a thank you to this month's donors.

Goodbye November..........

It has been a strange year to say the least! However at SOS we have achieved quite a lot with the help of so many around us.  Moving forward, with a great Board supporting us, we hope to be able to tackle some great projects and initiatives in the future.

After this year, it has become clear that SOS needs to become a more structured non-profit organisation, such as a Thai registered Foundation. We held our first Annual General Meeting (AGM) in November, and positions were made open to all to be able to have a seat on the new SOS Board.  The process to become a Foundation should take 3 months once the paperwork has been prepared.  And once we get Foundation status we will be able to do so much more.

One of the amazing ladies that started SOS, Shelley Poplak, welcomed everyone to the AGM.  She shared some stories how SOS originally started as a "joke" for a group of ladies to get together for lunch - and it has grown and evolved so much in the past 23 years, and something I know all of our sisters are proud of.

If you would like to know more about what we do - please head over to the website.  There's also a link to our donations page on the website.

It's nearly time for our

Christmas Market at Secret Garden
(Supporting SOS)

There will be a traditional Christmas market at Secret Garden on Saturday the 19th of December from 1pm-6pm. Stalls will be offering Christmas related products, with a percentage of sales going to Sisters on Samui (Secret Garden's chosen charity for the day).

SOS will have a stall too!  We're thinking to sell baked goods, jams and other items that can be sold as Christmas gifts (a bit like the Women's Institute in the UK).  It's a lovely way for us to meet with the community who have supported us throughout the year. If you have something you'd like to donate to the SOS stall or if you'd like to help on the day please email

There will be live acoustic music by Secret Garden’s favourite performers, a stall with (iced) mulled wine and BBQ and there will be kids activities as well.

If you would like to participate as a vendor at the Secret Garden Christmas Bazaar please send an email to

GREEN TIP:  Please save your empty glass jars. They can be recycled and reused to sell jam and chutney at the Secret Garden Christmas Bazaar on 19th December.

On the business side of things...

What an amazing day - thank you to Mihail Chesaru, Lissa Par and all the staff at Prana Resort - they truly put on a wonderful day for us - from creating our own SOS Wifi network and password ("Woman Power") - to offering vouchers to a few of the lucky ladies. Yvonne Roberts and Juliette Burrows spoke to the ladies about what we have all managed to achieve this year - a little emotional when you see it all down on paper!

Thank you to all of those that nominated, voted and attended the AGM.  SOS is the wonderful group it is because of our 300+ ladies that have attended, helped or assisted over the years - what a phenomenal group to be part of!

Our newly elected Sisters on Samui Board for 2021 includes:
  • President - Yvonne Roberts
  • Vice-President - Juliette Burrows
  • Associate Directors -
    • Natalie Kamolwattanasoontorn
    • Sandy Cacchione
    • Tammy Wade
  • Treasurer - Claudia Wilkinson
  • Secretary - Maya Wahrenberger

#FeedSamui Update

The past few months have seen the volume of food handouts go down, as so many people have left the island. We are still supporting and helping those that are left.  We have been feeding regularly about 10 camps in and around the Chaweng/Bophut/Maenam areas.

Just last week we were made aware of a new camp down in Lamai. All of the guys had been working for the same firm and they had all been let go after scraping by on not much. So we went straight down there and dropped off some food to them.

We are looking at getting a few large food drives done before the year is out. If you would like to attend or help in anyway then please get in touch - we have a #feedsamui committee set up and also if you would like to join this then please also get in touch.

Community Gardens Update

We have added more to the Learning Center for Magical Autistic Children, and recently spent the afternoon with children making lovely flower pictures. These children enjoy the interaction of our Green Sisters each week as they plant and water to make their garden grow.
We are also making plans to improve the small vegetable garden at Banbangrak School.  They have sent us a wish list (click here). If you would like to purchase any of these items or make a donation towards the project, please let us know. They need it all to help with their community garden at the school.

The children from Banbangrak primary school are excited about the future improvements to the vegetable garden at their school.  Can you help us with their wish list?  Email if you can.
The Community Gardens committee (affectionately known as the Green Sisters) meet every second Tuesday at 2:30pm.  Let us know if you'd like to help our little group and give back to the community.

GREEN TIP:  Please keep your empty plant pots for us.  They can be used for seedlings and plants that we are growing for the community gardens initiatives.
