Ahead of the 2021 Fespaco and JCC Tunisie, join us in revisiting the early years of African cinema in this 1983 documentary by Férid Boughedir, featuring film extracts and interviews with the continent's leading cinema voices.
After more than half a century of colonial cinema, Africans in newly independent countries could finally operate the camera themselves. Filming in the face of insurmountable obstacles while lacking both equipment and infrastructure, and taking whatever support they could get from within or outside the continent, these filmmakers, who had so long been barred from self-expression, strove to convey the varied realities of Africa as seen by the Africans. RSVP
