July News Update

Summer is in Sight...

Dear friend,

You wouldn’t guess that we have passed midsummer here in Chawton, but we’re not letting the wet weather dampen our spirits.  (At least the garden is benefitting!) In any case, there have been plenty of illuminating activities taking place indoors, including the launch of our exciting new temporary exhibition, Jane Austen’s Bookshop.  Running until the 6th July, some of the rarer exhibits include a sedan chair, and historical objects from Winchester’s Theatre Royal and College.  (Don’t forget that our volunteers can attend for free.)

In her recent lecture here, Professor Elizabeth Kowaleski Wallace spoke eloquently on Jane Austen’s engagement with the religious undercurrents – or equally, overtones – of her day, and Dr Katie Halsey made us think about ‘sight’ in Austen’s novels in a thought-provoking, new way.  September will herald a new programme of talks, so please spread the word and encourage others to come too.

We are optimistic for better weather on the 14th July for our ‘Vintage Car Day’, adding a fun new dimension to a visit to the gardens, whilst the 27th July production of ‘Much Ado About Nothing’ will bring an Italian summer to Chawton, whatever the weather.  See www.chawtonhouse.org for more details on all events, and to book.  Enjoy summer with us, whatever the weather!

Finally, a bit of breaking news:  we are delighted to announce that the Chawton House Library website will soon be receiving a bright new look!  In challenging times, we need to be able to communicate more effectively with all our visitors and friends, and provide further resources like online exhibitions to a wider audience as part of our education programme.  We think it is clearer and much easier to use – for us too; we will save a lot of staff admin time, and you will be able to get straight to the information and resources you want.

As ever, please email info@chawton.net, see www.chawtonhouse.org, or call Corrine on +44(0)1420 541010 for more information.

Very best wishes,  Chawton House Library
