WAMBA 2014 Calendar

To showcase some of the fantastic photography talent and great trails that we have in WA, WAMBA are producing a photo calendar for 2014.

Proceeds from the sale of the calendars will fund trail building and maintenance.

Head to the WAMBA website to preview the images selected. Pre-orders are available until 28th September at the discounted price of $25 including postage (go up to $28 after that). Two calendars cost only $45, and 3 are $65 (prices will rise to $48 and $68).

Luvin Shovels Opening and Photo Comp

WAMBA are pleased to announce that the Luvin Shovels trail will be opened on Sunday 6th October at 1pm. Meet us at The Dell before we head on up to the trail.

Luvin Shovels is a 2.4km Black Diamond freeride trail that has been built by volunteers over the last 15 months, with the assistance of a $15,000 grant from LotteryWest (to move the 200 cubic meters of clay used on the trail). It features many expertly crafted black diamond jumps and berms, plus a couple of double black diamond trail features.

To celebrate the opening of the trail WAMBA is running a photo competition to be held on Luvin Shovels. The winning photograph/s will be voted for on the WAMBA Facebook page.

The prize for the winning photographer is to shoot a photo essay on the new Gunjin trails for Flow Mountain Bike. Prizes for riders displaying their skills have kindly been donated by Kalamunda Cycles.
The event will run throughout the afternoon, sessioning 5 different sections of the trail and ending with a BBQ and beers.

If you are a keen photographer or a rider, please RSVP to Lindsay at trailbuilder@wamba.org.au. Spectators are encouraged to come and see the best on this epic trail.

We will also be announcing the winner of the the TREK bike draw, donated by FreeWheel Bicycle Store. Every volunteer who has contributed to these trails in 2013 is eligible to win this great prize.

So come along for a bite to eat and celebrate another fantastic year of new trails in Kalamunda.

Dwellingup 100 Wrap Up

I would like to personally thank the people who "Rode for someone who cant" in the Act Belong Commit Dwellingup 100 in 2013. These awesome people and their supporters have raised over $98 000 to date.

I say it every year, but this is one of the most rewarding parts of our event. knowing that our event provides the tool for this to happen. The great thing about raising this money is that every cent is used in a positive constructive way that genuinely makes a difference for those living with, or caring for those with Muscular Dystrophy.

Believe it or not, we are already planning ways to improve the event for next year and to reduce the congestion. The ides we came up with today will not only reduce congestion, but add to the fun factor big time.

The full 10 minute video will be released in the next weeks, but for now, here is the 3 minute version that Stuart has done a brilliant job on.

Introduction to MTB Orienteering

Ricky Thackray Australian Mountain Bike Orienteering Champion 2013 and Ian Dalton coach of the Australian Mountain Bike Orienteering team have just returned from the World Championships in Estonia.

On the 6th October, Orienteering WA will be holding a Mountain Bike Orienteering event at Karragullen (Karragullen Hall, Old Station Rd).  Want to get involved in Mountain Bike Orienteering?  Ricky will be conducting a coaching course over a short and easy 5 km event to introduce you to the sport.

If 5km’s is not enough for you, after you have been coached by Australia’s best you can go out and test your skills by yourself on either the short (10km), medium (20km) or long (30km) course at no additional charge after the coaching session.  All course lengths are approximate.

A limited amount of map boards will be available for hire at $5.  Course fees are $20/$10 for non-members/juniors (half price for OAWA members).  Registration is from 9am with coaching commencing at 9:30am.

Jarrahdale Maintenance

I'm happy to say we have locked in some dates for trail maintenance work to beat the warm weather!

Mark and his crew from Rock and Roll Mountain Biking will be on the ground in a couple of weeks time fixing up a heap of drainage and carving up some exciting new creations.

He's also got 2 great volunteer days lined up and it'd be super awesome if we can get some people out there for these.

The volunteer days will be as follows:
  1. Saturday 28th September, 8am - we'll be realigning the downhill section of the Button's Fall trail, making it fast AND flowy
  2. Date TBC - we'll be recreating the dropoff on the end of Valley of Opportunity

If you want to have your say and help with the volunteer days, then make sure you lock these away in the diary.

Look forward to seeing lots of you out there.

Volunteers Needed For MTB Working Group

DPaW is seeking your help in guiding mountain bike trail development in Western Australia.

In 2006 the Department of Parks and Wildlife (DPaW) prepared DRAFT Mountain Bike Management Guidelines for mountain biking activities being undertaken on DPaW managed lands.

Since then there has been considerable development in mountain biking activities and DPaW in conjunction with WestCycle and WAMBA, are seeking Expressions of Interest (EoI) to participate in a Mountain Bike Working Group (MTBWG).

The revised guidelines will assist DPaW staff in consistent management of MTB activities on DPaW managed lands including planning, building and maintenance. They will also be available to the wider mountain biking community including, clubs, land managers, trail builders etc.
If you are interested in joining the group, please read the attached documents and fill out the form by clicking the links below.
