WAMBA AGM And Social

The 2013 WAMBA AGM and End of Year Social will be held at the Calamunnda Camel Farm this Sunday (24th March).

The schedule for the day will be as follows:
  • 0800 - Group(s) ride of the Kalamunda Circuit
  • 1100 - FREE sausage sizzle at the Camel Farm
  • 1130 - WAMBA AGM
All committee positions are available for election. There are a number of roles that we would love to see people take up, that we have not been able to fill in the past. These include,

  • DH trail advocates (desperately needed)
  • People with an interest in neglected trails eg Goat Farm, Dwellingup
  • Youth development representative
  • Munda Biddi liaison officer
  • DH & XC racers to help clubs co-ordinate state series & champs, leading into WAMBA taking a greater role in 2014 and beyond
  • Sales/marketing type people to help sell sponsorship on trails/maps to raise funds for trail maintenance
  • An accountant to assist us with GST registration for WAMBA
  • Assistance for regional clubs
If you have any of these skills or interests and would like to contribute to WAMBA and grass roots mountain biking, we would love to meet you.

If you are unable to attend, email nominations will be accepted. Please send them to info@wamba.org.au.

Every Metre Counts winner announced

Congratulations to David Niven who is the winner of the Every Metre Counts raffle. His prize is a $4,000 bike of his choice, kindly donated by Specialized Austraila. Our thanks to them.

Also a huge thank you to everyone else who bought tickets. The final total was just over $24,000, which will be spent on building great new trails.

WAMBA committee thank yous also go to Phil Wilson for thinking up this brilliant idea, Lindsay Alsop for securing the prize and all the committee members who sold tickets and promoted the raffle, especially Margarey McIlroy who did a legendary job at the 12 hour.

Scorpion Trail Realignment

The old start of Scorpion trail, that was located in the RPZ, has now been rehabilitated, as has the unsanctioned trail to the dangerous crossing of Mundaring Weir Rd. Scorpion Trail is now accessed from Metasoma via the new link and climb which has now been completed and is ready to ride (see map above).

Next up is to put a whole lot more sting at the end of the Scorpion!

We will be running volunteer days shortly, register your interest at trailbuilder@wamba.org.au.

Meet the WAMBA Committee

In a series of articles, we are introducing the hardworking volunteers who make up the WAMBA committee. You might be surprised to find that they are mountain bikers, just like you... Next up is WAMBA secretary Jake Hannah.

Why did you join the WAMBA committee?
I wanted to give something back to a sport that I have gained so much from. In particular I wanted to help solve the problem of any newcomer to Perth or mountain biking, "where to ride?"

How long have you been on the committee?
Since it reformed in 2009.

Has much changed since then?
Yes, lots and lots. WAMBA has grown from the grave, to being a very small group (5 people) who had no idea what they are doing and no-one would listen to, to a very busy committee that is getting noticed, winning large grants, getting trails built and, probably as importantly, is slowing getting known by the riders. We still have a long way to go and need to represent downhill, racing (of all types) and regional clubs better, but we are getting there.

Have you been involved with trail advocacy previously?
No.

What is your role on the committee?
I sometimes feel a bit like the glue that holds the committee together. I draw the maps, send the newsletters and try and help the real heroes  the trail advocates like Ian and Lindsay, where ever I can when they need a GPS file or a document drawn up.

Describe some of the projects that you have been involved with?
The biggest thing that I have organised was the Kalamunda Circuit trail opening in March 2012. I also gave a presentation at the State Trails Conference last year, which went down well. At the moment I am working on an exciting new trail map and guide for the Perth Hills.

If you could wave your magic wand, what would you change/improve in mtbiking in WA?
To see the mountain biking recognised as the important recreation that it and managed properly. It is probably asking a bit much to expect riders to take ownership of the trails that they ride, but I can dream...
