We celebrate our 40th anniversary with free ebook chapters, a party, and more!

Forty Years of Books without Bosses!

We're not shy about our age. As you may have already heard, this year we're celebrating BTL's 40th anniversary! To mark this important milestone we're throwing a party. If you're in Toronto on May 31st we want you there! See all the details below and thanks for supporting us for all these years!

Who says you only get presents on your birthday? We're showering our readers with gifts all year long! To celebrate our 40th anniversary BTL readers can access our free ebook chapters page. We have carefully selected a variety of chapters and will deliver them to you online, no digital restrictions, gimmicks, or charges, just book chapters for free from our most important, relevant, and resonant books! We just released the first two with many more to come! We hope you enjoy them.

Now, what do we want for our birthday? We want to be a stronger voice in independent progressive publishing, of course. You can help by chipping in what you can spare for our fundraising drive.

Thanks to you and all our readers for supporting 40 years of books without bosses!

Wheel of Fortune

For our first free ebook chapter we chose Jamie Swift's Wheel of Fortune: Work and Life in the Age of Falling Expectations first published in 1995. It's a tale of two cities--Kingston and Windsor--set against the backdrop of 90's globalization, free trade, and the unrestricted power of multinational corporations that seek to dash workers' hopes for secure employment. Read this chapter and you'll agree that this book is as relevant today as it was when it was written.

Start reading chapter 9: "Work, Time, and the Wheel of Fortune" here, now available in the format of your choice.

Getting Doctored

For our second free ebook chapter we chose Martin Shapiro's Getting Doctored: Critical Reflections on Becoming a Physician. BTL's first critical memoir published in 1978 (original price $6.95) Getting Doctored explores the process whereby young medical students are transformed, seemingly overnight, into hardened, often alienated "professionals" working in a viciously competitive, anachronistic, and militaristic system.

Books, Beer, and Birthday Cake

BTL isn't the only publisher getting up there. This year, the University of Manitoba Press turns 50 and Fernwood Publishing turns 25. Join all three of us on May 31st as we collectively celebrate our authors and our publishing accomplishments at the oldest LGBTQ indie bookstore in the world, the Glad Day BookshopSee all the details here and come out and celebrate 115 years of independent Canadian publishing. Take that, Canada 150!

Strengthen BTL with your donation

We need books to make a difference. In a world that runs on sound bites and tweets, we risk the loss of the long-form argument. If you love books, especially BTL books, you can now help out our independent publishing house right here

Want to be our comrade, fellow-traveller, or are you more of a BTL sympathizer? Find out all the different ways to support your friendly, local, radical publisher by visiting our donation page.

If you dig deep and donate a lump-sum of $250, or $25/month for the rest of the year (or more!) we'll send you a special swag bag. As a BTL conspirator you'll get all the BTL collectibles that would make any true radical book lover jealous.
