Communities of Care

For this newsletter I want to sweep a little wider than the ABLE program and share with you some excerpts of what Cathleen Jones, founder of Children In Families, shared recently about a new sponsorship program for CIF called Communities of Care:

"For years I have wrestled with the whole idea of child sponsorship.  As many of you know, my husband and I ran an orphanage many years ago.  We worked closely with a very reputable sponsorship program in order to get funding through child sponsors.  We saw a lot of good things, but we also saw a different side of sponsorship...This is why for the past five years I have sought to rework the whole idea of child sponsorship to come up with something that would fit with the core values of Children In Families. We wanted to have a program that would provide donors with a personal sense of connection, while, at the same time, we needed it to protect the rights, dignity, and confidentiality of the children needing help."

This program has been launched to coincide with a wonderful matching gift opportunity from a Christian foundation. From now until December 2014 every gift from a new donor to Children In Families will be matched 100% up to a total of $30,000. This includes all donations given over that time period through the Communities of Care program.

So, whether you'd like to give a one time gift or become a regular sponsor through Communities of Care, your giving during this limited time will have double the impact!!

It's still a few months away, but Lisa is preparing to return to the U.S. for a six-month home assignment in March 2014. The work of the ABLE program will continue in the capable hands of ABLE's Khmer physiotherapist, Srey Ny. At that point we will have been operating for just over a year. We have been fine tuning our operations, so we're still in progress with getting family-centered plans in place for all of our children, but we're starting to dream a little about the next phase. Before Lisa came to Cambodia she had come to believe that one of the needs of families affected by disabilities in Cambodia is quality respite care. We've seen this need confirmed and so we're praying for the resources to start a respite day program. We'll keep you informed as things develop.

And for Lisa's personal take on this preparation time check out her personal blog post

Prayer & Praise:

Praise the Lord with us for:
  • God's continued care over Cambodia.
  • The generosity of the foundation providing the matching gift opportunity and for all who support CIF financially, prayerfully, and in other ways as well.
  • God's continued direction and provision for ABLE and CIF.
Please pray with us for:
  • Great connections to be developed through the new Communities of Care program.
  • Wisdom and clear direction as we continue to develop the ABLE program and prepare for Lisa's temporary absence.
  • Provision of the necessary funds to meet the needs of these children and families. Please pray that the matching gift program will provide a big boost with this.
