The School is Coming to Town”

The Harpers Ferry Area Heritage Society is very pleased to have entered into a lease agreement with the Martelle Family Trust for a piece of land next to the Tillinghast Park at the corner of Vine and North 2nd Street. The “Doc” Martelle family’s generosity and graciousness has allowed the Harpers Ferry Area Heritage Society to acquire this land to move the Oil Springs School to this new location.  Steve and Shirley Hawes are generously gifting the “Oil Springs” school to the Harpers Ferry Area Heritage Society. They want to see the school restored and this will help preserve a piece of Harpers Ferry history and exhibit the history of rural schooling in Iowa.  It will also provide an initial location for their museum holdings.  The foundation and moving of the school and outhouse from the present location, north of Harpers Ferry on the Great River Road, should take place in the next 6 to 8 weeks.  Watch for the move!!

November is...

The Perfect Storm/Managing Generational Differences

For the first time ever, there are four generations (soon to be five!) in the workforce. This has never happened before and is creating all kinds of new issues. Each generation, Traditionalists, Baby Boomers, Generation X and Generation Y bring a different perspective to the workplace. Unless bridged, these differences can be frustrating and will impact an organization's bottom line. What are each generation's core values? What do they expect of their leaders and how do they define success? In this engaging program, John Graci answers these questions and much more. Filled with concrete examples and entertaining front line stories, this presentation will show all attendees we are all "different" and how to make the most out of cross-generational differences.

This class is offered for FREE as Prosperity Eastern Iowa has grant funding to cover training for local businesses. Students at the Waukon location will be participating via web-based video conference transmitted from the host location in Manchester. The instructor will be face to face in Manchester.

Another Successful ATV/UTV Bluff Country Ride
The 2nd Annual ATV/UTV Bluff Country Ride was October 1st.  Three groups of approximately 20 units departed Harpers Ferry starting at 8:15 a.m.  The groups traveled to Village Creek Bible Camp and were greeted with smiles and freshly baked cookies.  Lunch was prepared by the Pork Producers compliments of Waukon Feed Ranch at the top of Mt. Hosmer.  A ride across the ridge to Countryside Orchard gave the riders an opportunity to learn about the apple orchard as well as buy apples, jams and pie.  As the group made their way south again, a stop at the Driftless Area Education & Visitor Center was scheduled.  The riders had an early bird look at the incredible view of the Mississippi River and bluffs from the center.  The last stop was at the new Wexford Campground.  Barry’s Ice Cream Truck made a special delivery to the riders.  The ride was more than 85 miles…it was a full day.  Rides like these gives Allamakee County the opportunity to show off the beautiful landscape and businesses and hopefully wet their appetite so they want to return.  33/70 units were from out of the county.  We pulled participants from Minnesota and Wisconsin.  The ride also brought overnight stays, dining and gas purchases within the county.  Thank you to Harpers Ferry Boosters Inc. and Main Street Lansing for your efforts.  The event was a success and we are looking forward to the 3rd annual!
