Summer Terms in San Juan, Puerto Rico
A Summer Term consists of a four-week Intensive Language and Culture session. Over the course of the summer, Spanish Studies Abroad offers two terms so that students can choose a term that works best with their schedule. During this time, students take an intensive language and culture course while also discovering the culture and people of Puerto Rico. Advanced students may also choose to participate in an internship or service learning opportunity during their summer term.
About San Juan
Originally claimed for Spain in 1493 by Christopher Columbus, Puerto Rico remained under Spanish control until it was ceded to the United States in the Spanish-American War of 1898.
In 1952 the island became a commonwealth of the United States and remains so to this day. The city of San Juan is the largest capital in the Caribbean and is considered the cultural heart of Puerto Rico.
There are two options for students who wish to study in San Juan over the summer:
Students can take elementary Spanish. During Summer Term 1, Spanish as a Foreign Language, Level 1 is offered. During Summer Term 2, Spanish as a Foreign Language, Level 2 is offered.
Students with four semesters of college Spanish, or the equivalent, completed can enroll in Integrated courses at Universidad del Sagrado Corazón.
Courses in many subjects are available to students who are interested in the Integrated coursework:
Humanistic and Social Studies
The course guide for both options can be found by clicking here.
About Universidad del Sagrado Corazón (USC):
Universidad del Sagrado Corazón is the oldest private educational institution in Puerto Rico. Three of its buildings, the Main Administration Building, the Portico and Chapel, have also been listed in the National Register of Historic Sites.
Located on 32 acres in the heart of San Juan, the university has both a distinctive campus and an urban environment. The smaller size of USC creates an atmosphere in which students are able to build support systems and friendships within the tight knit campus community.
For students to be eligible, theyneed a 3.0 overall GPA. For advanced students, they also need a 3.0 GPA in their Spanish coursework. If your student's GPA is below this, contact us to discuss their options.
