DocoPOD: Documentary Development Program

Have a great idea for a documentary?

Independent producer Susan McKinnon (Paul Kelly – Stories of MeLife in MovementThe Oasis) will be visiting Canberra this August (29–30) to run ScreenACT’s DocoPOD, a 2-day development course aimed at giving filmmakers the necessary skills to shape their documentary idea into a solid project with strong market potential.

Across the two-days you’ll learn everything from how to develop an idea, how to pitch your project to commissioning editors, and how and where to apply for funding. Susan will also give a studied overview of what is currently happening in the world of documentary, and what options are available to emerging filmmakers. During DocoPOD participants will also have an opportunity to share their documentary ideas with Susan, and receive expert feedback.

Congratulations to ACT
Indigenous Filmmaker
s

ScreenACT congratulates Marissa McDowell and Richard Jameson for taking out two of only nine available places in Screen Australia’s Indigenous Producers Initiative. This is a massive opportunity for both ACT filmmakers to hone their producing skills and take the next step in their careers. The 12-month program will also involve internships with experienced producers, mentoring, participation in external conferences and markets and guidance on developing their slate of projects.

Local Producer Cindy Li Wins
International Business Award

Local film producer Cindy Li (JIA Films) was acknowledged last month for her outstanding contribution to international trade with the presentation of the HKABA NSW Import of Goods/Services Award. The Hong Kong-Australia Business Associate (HKABA) NSW Chapter Business Awards recognises companies that excel in fostering trade opportunities between Australia and Hong Kong SAR, China. The award comes hot on the heels of Cindy Li’s recent selection for Screen Producers Australia's (SPA) Ones To Watch program for 2015.

Cindy Li was part of the ACT Screen Industry Trade Delegation that visited the Hong Kong Film Market earlier this year. Cindy, along with partner SilverSun Pictures, recently signed a MOU with Yuezhong Pictures to develop and co-produce multiple feature films and other screen projects over the next decade. The deal has the potential to deliver $50 million worth of production in the ACT over the next decade. For more information CLICK HERE.

ACT Filmmaker Nominated
for AWGIE

The Australian Writers’ Guild (AWG) announced the nominees for the 48th Annual AWGIE Awards last month which included a nod for local writer/director Vanessa Gazy for her 2014 AFTRS student film FOAL. Recognition for Vanessa's outstanding work on FOAL has also come from the Australian Directors Guild earlier in the year with an ADG Award nomination.

For one night only (12 August), Palace Electric Cinemas will be hosting a screening of the acclaimed feature film UNITY.
