Last Chance to Apply for Local Film Ambassador Opportunity - CIFF Body of Work 

 

The Canberra International Film Festival (CIFF) presents the inaugural ‘Body of Work’ program this year by hosting the king of independent cinema, Harvey Weinstein.
 
Harvey Weinstein and his brother Bob founded Miramax Films (1979) and The Weinstein Company (2005) in New York City and have produced some of the most memorable movies of the past 20 years from Pulp Fiction to Shakespeare in Love.
 
Harvey has also supported some of Australia’s most iconic films of the modern era including The Sapphires, Strictly Ballroom and Muriel’s Wedding – helping launch a number of Australian filmmakers onto the world stage.
 
Canberra International Film Festival is offering one Gold Pass to ‘Body of Work’ which will entitle the successful applicant entry to all the talks, panel discussions, Q&A’s and film screenings as well as the Virgin Ball that will be held across the three day event.   A huge thank you to the CIFF team for this fabulous opportunity!
 
The successful applicant will be someone who can act as an Ambassador for the local film industry as they rub shoulders with industry professionals from around the world.  Do you have what it takes?

ACT Screen Arts Fund Closes November 4

The ACT Screen Arts Fund focuses on projects and programs that develop screen artists – moving artists into new stages of their development. The Fund supports all narrative screen art forms from film, television, documentary, short film, experimental film, games, apps and digital media. You are able to apply for development, production and mentorships up to $20,000.

New High-End Television Development Program Announced
Screen Australia has announced a landmark program to support the development of internationally driven high-end television drama. The program has been set up in recognition of the unprecedented audience and market growth for high-end television, including titles such as Game of Thrones, Breaking Bad, Top of the Lake, House of Cards and The Bridge.

The program aims to assist Australian producers to develop inventive, high-end ideas from concept to series bible and first draft pilot script. It will fund up to five projects each year in two rounds, with up to $40,000 available for each successful project. The deadline for applications for the first round is 25 November 2013, with the guidelines and the application form now available on the Screen Australia website
 

YouTube Information Session with Kristen Bowen

YouTube leaders see untapped potential for Australian content creators to connect directly with their audiences and expand their reach online.
 
Kristen Bowen, Manager Content Relationships, YouTube Entertainment, will provide an insider’s view of the YouTube ecosystem; including potential for partnerships, revenue, copyright management, customisation, trends, YouTube’s Playbook and other tools.

Grant Recipients for ACT Screen Development Fund 2013 Announced

ScreenACT wishes to thank all the applicants to this year's Development Fund for their hard work and patience. The quality of the projects involved hugely impressed the selection panel, contributing towards a very strong field of candidates.   
 
The filmmakers/game developers and their projects selected for funding are listed below (in no particular order):

  • Peter Castle for 'Tahira: Echoes of The Astral Empire' (Game)
  • James Hunter for 'Maralinga' (Feature Film)

 We wish them all the best of luck on their endeavours, and eagerly anticipate the results of their hard work through the coming year.


Mike Leigh's Character-Based Improvisation Process with Rob Marchand 

This is a 5 day intensive workshop for directors and actors, exploring an exciting alternative way to create drama for stage and film: Mike Leigh's unique improvisation process. The workshop is a hands-on investigation, examining Mike's methods from beginning to end - participants acquire direct, first-hand knowledge by taking part in progressive character and scene-building exercises.
 
This practical hands-on exploration for actors and directors in stage and film will cover:
  • Improving communication between actor and director
  • Providing a new approach to script development
  • Finessing Performance
  • Demonstrating how improvisations can really deliver results
  • Adding detail to scripted material
  • Exploring the unexpected
Course facilitator Robert Marchand is a director and writer. He has specialised in television mini-series with an emphasis on performance and character. His credits include Fields Of Fire, Come In Spinner, Sun On The Stubble, Kangaroo Palace and The Potato Factory. He has been awarded four AFI Awards and his work has had numerous AFI and Logie nominations.

ScreenACT Launch Online Actors Directory

ScreenACT launched its free online Actors Directory in April. Actors can now upload their headshots, resumes and links to video clips to help create an individual profile that will be searchable by interested film productions. The online database will enable casting professionals to search through the directory by age, gender, physical characteristics and credits. An Extras Directory has also been established to help identify/organise extras for film, television and documentary productions.

SASI Insurance Update  

ScreenACT is once again be offering SASI members low-cost public liability insurance for non-commercial filmmaking in 2013/14. It covers $20 million public liability and limited equipment theft and loss on location. ScreenACT is heavily subsidising this insurance as we believe every filmmaker should be covered for public liability when shooting in the ACT, and many locations require it. Project Attachment Register

Part of a condition of being funded through the ACT Screen Investment Fund is for a production to take on "attachments".  An attachment is a paid position which gives the attached person experience and credits.  This attachment program is designed to help the ACT build capacity in various positions. In most cases, productions will take on a number of attachments but would require that the attachee have had some exposure to the role that they are taking on.

Write Your Funny Movie with Lucy Baker

 This course is run by the ACT Writers Centre, and will cover topics such as:
  •  is this idea the right idea?
  • what you need to know about structure
  • know your comedy genre
  • how to make comedy writing look easy
  • the pulling power of character
  • thickening your plot
  • mastering the perfect pitch
  • what next?
Participants need to bring their idea and/or first draft, as they will be working on their movies, through a series of exercises in addition to watching excerpts from movies that demonstrate plot formation, turning points and characterisation.

Lucy Baker has taught screenwriting for over a decade. She has won several international awards for writing, with one of her comedy screenplay nominated for the Monte Miller AWGIE Award for 'Best Australian Script'.
 
When: 10am-4pm, Saturday 23 November
Venue: ACT Writers Centre workshop room.
Cost: $110 members, $95 concessional members, $170 non-members (includes 12 months of membership); SASI Members receive the Member discount

AIE Open Day - November 16

Discover the courses designed to get you started in game development, 3D animation and visual effects at the AIE Open Day on Saturday 16th November.  Sydney, Melbourne and Canberra campuses will be opening their doors to visitors eager to find out about full-time and part-time courses staring in February 2014.
 
The day will include presentations on different areas of industry to get into as well as information about AIE full-time and part-time courses and entry requirements. Student work will be on display and our teachers will be available to speak with you one on one about our courses and how AIE can get you into a creative career.

Short Film Script Reading Service

Need help with developing your short film script? ScreenACT is providing a script reading service for $22 for filmmakers who would like to have their script analysed before going into production. National short film award winner Marisa Martin will be critiquing the scripts and will give detailed constructive feedback. This is a great way to improve your script which ultimately improves the film itself. This service provides a great opportunity to get real professional advice without the cost of a professional script editor.

Screen Australia’s Announces New Short Film Program ‘Hot Shots’

Screen Australia launched Hot Shots last week, a new short film program that will fund up to three short dramas, each up to a maximum of eight minutes, with a budget of $70,000 per project.
 
Filmmakers will need to be inventive, creative and professional and be ready to tell surprising and emotionally engaging stories without breaking the bank.
 
Hot Shots is a great opportunity for filmmakers to progress their skills and careers.
 
The films must be professionally made on a $70,000 budget without additional finance, encouraging innovation and experimentation with an emphasis on strong and distinctive storytelling.

Applications Open for Rotterdam Lab 26-29 January 2014

Screen Australia, in partnership with the International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR), is again offering special assistance for up to three producers to attend the Rotterdam Lab, organised as part of CineMart at IFFR 2014.
 
The Rotterdam Lab is a training program for emerging feature film producers from participating countries. It is designed to provide them with the skills and knowledge to work in the international marketplace. IFFR organises panel sessions and networking opportunities each day with invited key members of the industry, focusing on international feature film sales, financing, distribution and pitching.
 
Screen Australia will select three producers to participate in the 2014 Rotterdam Lab. Each will receive five nights’ accommodation and $3,000 towards travel costs to attend.
 
Guidelines and an application form are available from the Screen Australia website.
 
The deadline for applications is 5pm Friday 8 November 2013.
