ACT Screen Investment Fund Opens New Round

The ACT Screen Investment Fund is calling for applications for production investment funding for eligible screen projects.  The Guidelines for applicants, application forms and other information on the application process can be found on the ACT Government’s Business and Industry Development website.
 
The deadline for the submissions of full application materials is 5pm on Friday 2 September 2011.

Participants are encouraged to liaise with the ScreenACT Director or the ACT Screen Investment Fund Program Manager during the preparation of their applications. 




Screen Australia Presentation

ScreenAustralia is coming to Canberra and will be holding a Presentation about their grant and investment programs.   The presentation will be covering Producer Offset, Documentary, Development and Production Funding available through ScreenAustralia.  The presentation is part of Producer Pod, but this session ONLY will be open to non-podders as a free seminar with an opportunity for questions. The Pressentation will be held in the ScreenACT Training Room, 216 Northbourne Ave Braddon on Friday 22nd July, 2.00-3.30-pm.

Attendance to this Presentation is Free, but Booking is ESSENTIAL viainfo@screenact.com.au.

Producer Pod - Phase One Wrap-Up

The first part of Producer Pod was held over the weekend - 36 emerging producers participated in four full intensive days on what it takes to be a Producer.  Beginning with Monica's own war stories, the first day continued with a skype session with Mary Jane Skalski .  This was followed by Business Basics presented by Canberra Business Point - a thoroughly exhausting day but one that generated much discussion and thought.  Day 2 & 3 brought us the wonderful Stephen Cleary who imparted his wisdom on how best a Producer should approach development, with lots of practical advice on dealing with writers and lots of great annecdotes.  The final day of this first part of Producer Pod saw Tait Brady from AFTRS present his workshop on Producing Low Budget Features wtih a weath of statistics, case studies and practical advice.   All in all the weekend, while slightly overloading, was a really positive one, equiping all participants with great, practical, useful advice that they will carry on to the next session in two weeks time.



Producer Pod - Film Stream Dates Announced

Producer Pod will continue later in the year into separate streams where participants will be able to focus on the ins and outs of producing in their particular media.  We are announcing the dates for the Feature Film Stream:  23 – 25th September, 2011.  These sessions will be run by Stephen Cleary.   More information available shortly, including the dates for the other stream: Documentary and Television.

Opening Shot Doco Grants

Call for Applications: REVISED DEADLINE 5pm, Friday 22nd July

Due to an overwhelming number of enquiries regarding eligibility, and in the spirit of encouraging as many emerging program makers as possible, ABC TV Documentaries and Screen Australia are widening the criteria for this initiative.  Please note applicants are now eligible if they ‘have at least one screen credit in a significant creative role (eg director, producer, DOP, editor, associate producer, writer, field director, or researcher) that has either been broadcast and/or screened at a recognised film festival. Films made at a film school qualify. Credits can be in documentary or drama production, and may include short films and television series.’  Applicants can apply for up to $80,000 for each half-hour documentary. ‘Emerging’ is defined as the director being 35 or under at 22 July 2011.

Graphic 2011 Animation Competition

Entry Deadline: Sunday 17th July

The Sydney Opera House's Graphic Festival is seeking a entries for their 30 second animation competition for animators of all levels, based around the theme of 'escape'. Winners will see their films screened at the Sydney Opera House.  Illustrators, animators and storytellers of all levels – from established to up-and-coming and newcomers – are encouraged to enter. The winner will receive $20,000 prize money (to be used for professional development or to make a feature) and have their entry screened before the festival’s headline event on Sunday 21 August in the Concert Hall, Robert Crumb: In Conversation with Gary Groth.

Slamdance Film Festival

Entry Deadline: 5th August (early), 16th Sept (regular), 21st October (late)

Slamdance Film Festival (January 20-26, 2012, Park City, UT) – Serves as a showcase for the discovery of new and emerging independent artists and is dedicated to the nurturing and development of their vision. Accepts films in every genre, on any topic from every country around the world. Seeking entries in the following categories: Narrative Feature (40 minutes or longer; made by first-time feature filmmakers), Short (under 40 minutes), Documentary Feature (over 40 minutes; made by first-time feature documentary filmmakers), and Documentary Short (under 40 minutes). FEE: $30-$100.

DigiSPAA Feature Film Competition

Entry Deadline: 5pm, Friday 16th September

This year the competition boasts a prize pool of $15,000 cash, $20,000 worth of post-production, a guaranteed screening of the winning film on the Movie Extra channel and a return airfare and free registration to the prestigious CineMart International Film Festival Rotterdam, in Netherlands.  Eligible films are feature length, with a running time of at least 70mins, digitally produced and completed to advanced post-production stage no earlier than 30 August 2010, and independently funded.

Lighthouse Entrepreneur Development Fund

Applications may be lodged at any time

The Entrepreneur Development Fund (EDF) is a pilot program funded by the ACT Government, Lighthouse Business Innovation Centre Pty Ltd and Epicorp Limited. EDF is designed to facilitate the development of key individuals in high-growth potential businesses in the ACT through skills and knowledge transfer. The pilot program will run from 1 July 2011 through to 31 December 2012 unless funding is expended earlier. For more information and examples of eligible projects see EDF Program Structure.

Local Aspiring Screenwriter Wins Prize

Canberran, Liam Smith, an aspiring screenwriter, has won the Grand Prize in the Cellar Door Cinema Screenplay contest with his script "Letters to Camille". The contest was open to writers from around the world and it was announced on the July 1, that Liam had taken out the Grand Prize, which includes his screenplay being put in production and toured around film festivals.  

CADA Have You Got Talent Day

Saturday 23rd July

Canberra Academy of Dramatic Art is looking for talent. We are holding an exciting event titled Have You Got Talent? Day, offering Canberra actors the chance to be noticed by industry people (including agents, actors and directors). Participants will have three minutes to present their act through a day-time workshop - and if selected, they’ll be invited back that evening to perform in front of our professional panel. Canberra Academy of Dramatic Art is offering a full-time Scholarship to its Certificate III in Performance (Acting) course (valued at $5,500), which starts in August.

Cinetrain: Russian Doco Experience

Rottofest Short Film Festival

Call for Entries: Deadline 12th August
 
The Search for Australia's Funniest Filmmakers returns to Rottnest Island, Western Australia on September 3rd - 4th as part of the 3rd annual Rottofest.  Search for Australia's Funniest Filmmakers contains 2 categories for budding comedy filmmakers to enter: Funniest Skit - Up to 3 minutes in length and Funniest Film - Between 3 to 15 minutes in length (Prize $1500).

International Short Film Festival Leuven

Entry Deadline: Wednesday 3rd August

The 17th edition of the International Short Film Festival Leuven (Belgium) will take place from December 3 - 10, 2011 at Arts Center STUK and Cinema ZED. The festival programme consists of more than 120 screenings in 5 venues. The programme contains live action films, animated shorts, music videos, documentaries and non-narrative shorts. The festival  screens about 300 short films from all over the world, divided into 30 compilations. The2011 programme will include an extensive European Competition and Shorts from Down Under (Australian special).

Cinemart Co-Pro Market

Application Deadline: Thursday 1st September

CineMart, the feature film market at the International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR), will again present around 30 international projects to approximately 850 professionals from the international film industry, ranging from sales agents, producers and distributors to television buyers and funding agencies. It will run from Sunday 29 January to Wednesday 1 February 2012.
 Attendance has proved invaluable for many Australian filmmakers over the years, both to get their projects to the market and to escalate their careers and their international networks.

 Filmmakers with projects selected for CineMart are eligible to apply for a Screen Australia travel grant. Applicants should visit their travel grants page for further information.

Canberran Film Selected for New York City Festival

Locally produced animation 'Tegan the Vegan' has been selected for screening at the New York City International Film Festival, to be held in August this year.  The animated film of 13 mins duration picked up 'Best Australian Animation' at the WOW Film Festival earlier this year and stars Paul McDermott and Noni Hazlehurst.  This will be the film's international premiere.  Congratulations to the Tegan cast and crew including Marisa Martin (now working part time at ScreenACT), Geraldine Martin, Janine Jeffreys and Belinda Barancewicz.

Mindscapes National Short Film Competition

Entries Close: Friday 2nd September

World Mental Health Day on the 10th of October 2011 is fast approaching and the ACT Government and mental health community are marking the occasion by holding a Mental Health Music, Arts and Film Festival called “Mindscapes”. The theme of the Mindscapes Festival is “No Health without Mental Health”which is also the theme for the National Short Film Competition.  

There are three categories that allow everyone to share their ideas on the theme: Open, Consumer and Carers, and Student.  Prizes will be awarded in each category.  It is anticipated that the shortlisted films will be shown at the Mindscapes Short Film Festival on the 12th of October.  For more info: Rachel Muller  02 62497756 admin@mhccact.org.au
