ACT Screen Development Fund Information Session

ScreenACT will be hosting an information session on Thursday 8th August about the upcoming ACT Screen Development Fund round for 2013. Funding is available for script development, project development and/or marketing activities. Please note that this funding is for projects that can expect a commercial return, and therefore short films are not eligible. 

The Development Fund has undergone a number of changes to its guidelines this year, and potential applicants are strongly encouraged to attend the hour-long meeting to be fully informed about the new provisions and eligibility requirements. The Fund will officially open on Thursday 8th August, and applications will be accepted until 5pm 9th September.

short::seasons Short Film Funding Opportunity

short::seasons is pleased to announce the second incarnation of short::seasons Project Film for spring 2013. This is an opportunity for Canberran filmmakers to get $1000, use of some equipment and heaps of support from the short::seasons team to make a film (under 10 minutes) for the next short::seasons film festival on the 27th of September. 

Firstly, you will need to submit a script you have written.  The short::seasons team will then pick the most suitable idea from the bunch and we will help you make it happen. One film will be chosen per season (two per year).

Apply Now for Crew Positions on Major Television Drama

The production of a 6 part political thriller for public broadcaster ABC will be shooting scenes in the ACT from September 2 to September 13. The Code is a fictional thriller set between the remote Australian desert and the corridors of power in Canberra. 

The production is looking to fill two crew positions:


If you're based in the ACT and interested in 2 weeks work as a Production Runner on a television drama, there is a position available for a hardworking and reliable person over the age of 21 with a full drivers licence to join Playmaker Media's production team for their Canberra shoot from 2nd September to 13th September 2013.  Local knowledge and a can-do attitude will be very helpful in securing this position.

SCRIPT SUPERVISOR: (Paid Attachment)
As part of a film crew the Script Supervisor (or Continuity Person) has the responsibilities of matching action within a scene and generally maintaining continuity across scenes due to the non-linear way television productions are shot. Script supervisors are also responsible for marking up scripts for the Editor so they know what has been shot each day and also reporting to the production each day on what scenes were shot, not shot, and the duration of each shoot.  It's a complex but rewarding role and will offer a terrific position to observe all aspects of the production. 
'The Code' is offering a paid attachment for a Script Supervisor - which will be a fantastic opportunity for someone looking to gain experience in this position. Part of a condition of being funded through the ACT Screen Investment Fund is for a production to take on "attachments".  An attachment is a paid position which gives the attached person experience and credits. This attachment program is designed to help the ACT build capacity in various positions, and is open to people of all levels of experience.

Call for Entries: short::seasons Spring Now Accepting Submissions

short::seasons is a short film festival that focuses on showcasing the work of filmmakers from the across the ACT.  It's a non-competitive short film festival that aims to demonstrate the strength and quality of the work being created by Canberra's vibrant independent filmmaking scene. This is the perfect opportunity to have your film exhibited at the state-of-the-art cinema housed at the National film & Sound Archive, and experience the thrill of having your work viewed by an audience on the big screen.

We welcome submissions from everyone, and do not require submission fees. We only accept electronic submissions. Films submitted for consideration for the Spring 2013 festival will be accepted until 5pm August 30th 2013. To submit a film please fill out this online submission form. You will need to include a web link to your film on the form.


ScreenACT Launch Online Actors Directory

ScreenACT launched its free online Actors Directory in April. Actors can now upload their headshots, resumes and links to video clips to help create an individual profile that will be searchable by interested film productions. The online database will enable casting professionals to search through the directory by age, gender, physical characteristics and credits. An Extras Directory has also been established to help identify/organise extras for film, television and documentary productions.

SASI Insurance Update  

ScreenACT is once again be offering SASI members low-cost public liability insurance for non-commercial filmmaking in 2013/14. It covers $20 million public liability and limited equipment theft and loss on location. ScreenACT is heavily subsidising this insurance as we believe every filmmaker should be covered for public liability when shooting in the ACT, and many locations require it. Please note that only 40 policies are still available through ScreenACT this calendar year, so please be sure to secure yours now before they sell out!

Need some equipment for a shoot? Just need a few small things? Well look no further! ScreenACT is proud to offer excellent equipment at an affordable rate. We have bought a new industry standard camera with lots of bits and bobs to add to the camera itself. ScreenACT are also hiring out lights, sound equipment and  tripods. Project Attachment Register

Applications for Community Arts Residency Program Now Open

Playing Field Studio is excited to announce two community arts residencies available in October 2013. Residency Program offers exclusive use of the Playing Field Studio space for one week during October, to develop or explore a creative practice. The residency includes a one-off grant to assist with materials for use during the project. Applicants must be Canberra-based individuals or community groups who wish to use the residency to explore or develop work using a creative medium such as film, music, performing arts, photography, visual art, digital media or art therapies. Travel Grants Available to Asian Animation Summit Available

Creators of Australian animated projects for children are invited to apply to participate in the second Asian Animation Summit (AAS), held in Phuket, Thailand, 9-11 December. Up to six projects will be selected from Australia and this call-out is aimed at commencing that process. Screen Australia, in conjunction with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, will offer travel grants of $3,000 per successful company. In addition, they will be offered two free registrations to AAS as well as access to reduced accommodation rates at the host hotel. Submission deadline is Friday 4 October 2013.

Short Film Script Reading Service 

Need help with developing your short film script? ScreenACT is providing a script reading service for $22 for filmmakers who would like to have their script analysed before going into production. National short film award winner Marisa Martin will be critiquing the scripts and will give detailed constructive feedback. This is a great way to improve your script which ultimately improves the film itself. This service provides a great opportunity to get real professional advice without the cost of a professional script editor.

Call for Applications: Screen Australia Enterprise Program

Screen Australia’s Enterprise Program will, once again, provide funding of up to $350,000 per year for a three-year period to support screen businesses that have identified opportunities to develop and expand.
For the 2013 funding round, up to $2.5 million in total will be split across the successful applicants over the three-year funded period.

Applications are invited from Australian producers seeking to progress their business through a range of strategies. These include further developing their slate of projects, investigating new business opportunities, developing industry and marketplace relationships, forming new business alliances, and attracting increased levels of private investment and marketplace attachments.

Applications close Friday 9 August 2013.

Entries are Now Open for the 2013 Walkley Documentary Awards

The Walkley Foundation is pleased to announce that entries are now open for the 2013 Walkley Documentary Award.
Documentaries may encompass and in-depth examination of issues of local, national or international importance or of contemporary or historic events and may include investigative, biographical and first person stories that reflect the emotion and drama of the human experience.
Entries close 5pm on Friday August 31, 2013. Entries must have been shown in the 12 months from September 1, 2012 to August 31, 2013 to be eligible for entry.
