 Last Week for Early Birds to Save on Comedy Workshop with Tim Ferguson 

One of Australia’s most successful comedians reveals the fundamentals of strong comedy writing in this 2-day workshop. Tim Ferguson (Doug Anthony All Stars, Funky Squad, Don’t Forget Your Toothbrush, Good News Week, The Glass House) offers simple, original and practical insights for screenwriters trying to expand into comedy writing for television and film.
Tim will provide new approaches to working with metaphors, juxtapositions, reversals, story structures, knowledge differentials, pathos, subtext and the rhythms of comic dialogue. Learn how to construct a sitcom from the ground up, making choices in terms of theme, genre, style and tone.
The course includes lectures, script analysis, workshopping and the viewing of excerpts from sitcoms and comedy films. It concludes with methods for formulating series bibles and pitching concepts to Australian and international film and television markets.
Tim is a consultant in narrative comedy and script development for production companies and television networks in Australia and Britain. He lectures in narrative comedy and screenwriting at RMIT's School of Media & Communication in Melbourne.

short::seasons Autumn 2013 Screens this Friday!

ScreenACT is rolling out the red carpet once again for short::seasons Autumn 2013. Showcasing the work of filmmakers from across the ACT region short::seasons is a non-competitive short film festival that promises to demonstrate the strength and quality of the work being created in Canberra’s independent film scene. The National Film and Sound Archive’s state-of-the-art Arc cinema will provide the perfect venue for a night of free entertainment that will include six World Premieres. 

We had a large number of films submitted on this occasion, and we are hugely appreciative of everyone who submitted their hard work to the festival. Friday the 31st of May promises to be a great night of unique filmmaking and we know you, the audience, are going to absolutely love what we have in store for you. Congratulations to all the filmmakers whose films we are screening. A listing of the festival’s line-up can be seen below:

SPAA Fringe & Studio Channel Can Kickstart Your Career

SPAA Fringe is a professional development program and networking platform for talented and ambitious producers who are in the early years of their career.
This year’s Fringe features two new initiatives – the SPAA: Ones to Watch mentorship program and STUDIO Kickstart, giving early-career producers the chance to produce a $300,000 series with STUDIO, Foxtel’s arts and entertainment channel. 

SPAA: Ones to Watch
  • Be promoted to SPAA’s industry database and SPAA’s membership of over 500 film, television and interactive media professionals
  • Be mentored by renowned film and television executives, who will coach you on how to develop business networks and prepare your pitch throughout the year
  • Build your networks through a bespoke schedule of meetings with screen industry executives at the SPAA Conference in November
STUDIO Kickstart
  • Pitch an original low budget and edgy TV series to, STUDIO, Foxtel’s arts and entertainment channel
  • Score $300K budget to produce your series in consultation and development with the STUDIO Executive Producer

Full details of SPAA’s new mentorship program and the STUDIO Kickstart initiative will be outlined at a presentation by SPAA and STUDIO at the St Kilda Film Festival on 27th May and at the SPAA Fringe workshop at Vivid Sydney 31st May. The SPAA Fringe workshop will focus on pitching your TV idea and will feature a Q&A session with screen executives from Australia’s top production companies and television networks.

Anthology Feature 'Locks of Love' Update

Filming has begun on Locks of Love, an anthology of 10 short films that explore the theme of love against the backdrop of the Nation’s Capital. The first two films have already shot and are currently in the editing process. The remaining group of eight films will be shooting over the next two months.
Two of the short film productions are seeking additional support via the crowdfunding platform Pozible to help them deliver the best possible film to screen.

ScreenACT Launch Online Actors Directory

ScreenACT launched its free online Actors Directory last month. Actors can now upload their headshots, resumes and links to video clips to help create an individual profile that will be searchable by interested film productions. The online database will enable casting professionals to search through the directory by age, gender, physical characteristics and credits. An Extras Directory has also been established to help identify/organise extras for film, television and documentary productions.

SASI Insurance Update  

ScreenACT is once again be offering SASI members low-cost public liability insurance for non-commercial filmmaking in 2013/14. It covers $20 million public liability and limited equipment theft and loss on location. ScreenACT is heavily subsidising this insurance as we believe every filmmaker should be covered for public liability when shooting in the ACT, and many locations require it. Need some equipment for a shoot? Just need a few small things? Well look no further! ScreenACT is proud to offer excellent equipment at an affordable rate. We have bought a new industry standard camera with lots of bits and bobs to add to the camera itself. ScreenACT are also hiring out lights, sound equipment and  tripods. Project Attachment Register

Part of a condition of being funded through the ACT Screen Investment Fund is for a production to take on "attachments".  An attachment is a paid position which gives the attached person experience and credits.  This attachment program is designed to help the ACT build capacity in various positions.  n most cases, productions will take on a number of attachments but would require that the attachee have had some exposure to the role that they are taking on.

AIE National Mid-Year Open Day 

Discover the courses designed to get you started in game development, 3D animation and visual effects at the AIE Open Day on Saturday 8th June 2013.  Sydney, Melbourne and Canberra campuses will be opening their doors to visitors eager to find out about full-time and part-time courses staring in July 2013 and February 2014.

Find out more about our July mid-year intake for full-time courses which are run in an intensive mode whereby the two year course is completed in 18 months.
The day will include presentations on different areas of industry to get into as well as information about AIE full time and part time courses and entry requirements. Student work will be on display and our teachers will be available to speak with you one on one about our courses and how AIE can get you into a creative career.

ABC TV Factual Calls for Proposals for Family Season

ABC TV Factual is calling for one-off documentary ideas to form a season on the ‘Family, and the Future of Family in Australia’ for ABC1. 

ABC TV Head of Factual Phil Craig said "“We’re looking to create a season for filmmakers who have something powerful and important to say, and we’re looking for a range of styles and voices that will engage a prime-time audience on ABC1 and really get people talking.” 

The subject of ‘Family and the Future of Family in Australia’ is deliberately broad: critical to the assessment criteria will be the strength of the central idea, and the creative approach for bringing it alive for the Australian prime-time audience.

ABC Factual will welcome concept pitches of approximately 2-3 pages, including a short statement about the online potential of the idea.

Short Film Script Reading Service 

Need help with developing your short film script? ScreenACT is providing a script reading service for $22 for filmmakers who would like to have their script analysed before going into production. National short film award winner Marisa Martin will be critiquing the scripts and will give detailed constructive feedback. This is a great way to improve your script which ultimately improves the film itself. This service provides a great opportunity to get real professional advice without the cost of a professional script editor.

Call for Applications: Producers Lab Toronto

IAustralia will this year be a guest country at the Producers Lab Toronto, to be held during the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival. The other guest country will be New Zealand. Producers with one or more feature projects in development suitable for co-production with Europe, Canada or New Zealand are invited to apply.
The Producers Lab Toronto is an initiative of European Film Promotion in partnership with the Ontario Media Development Corporation and the Toronto International Film Festival. It is financially supported by the European Union’s MEDIA Mundus Programme.
Up to four producers from Australia and New Zealand (two from each country) will be selected to meet with 10 European producers (from 10 different countries) and 10 Canadian producers to discuss and pitch their projects, and participate in a number of seminars and events.
The Lab takes place 4–7 September 2013. Further information, guidelines and application form are available on the Screen Australia website
The deadline for submissions is Monday 3 June 2013. Selection of Australian participants will be made by Screen Australia by the end of July.

Jobs, Dollars, Hearts & Minds: Screen Australia Conference on Australian Content in Canberra June 18

Screen Australia is hosting Jobs, Dollars, Hearts & Minds, a one-day policy conference in Canberra on the key issues and opportunities facing screen businesses and Australian content. Industry leaders and decision makers will describe their visions for the future, alongside new audience research and results from the first Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) screen sector survey in six years.
Speakers include Arts Minister Tony Burke, Senator George Brandis and Screen Australia Chair Glen Boreham AM.
A panel on the future for Australian content will be chaired by Screen Australia Chief Executive, Ruth Harley, and will feature: Greg Basser (CEO Village Roadshow Entertainment), David Haslingden (NHNZ and Chairman Channel 9), Megan Elliott (Director X|Media|Lab), Kim Dalton (former Director ABC TV) and Larla Flynn (Head of Public Policy Google). 

Just Announced: A keynote session by author, media commentator and researcher Dr Rebecca Huntley, Director of Ipsos Mackay research, presenting new audience research commissioned by Screen Australia on the impact of Australian content.
This will be followed by industry luminaries, directors Gillian Armstrong and Wayne Blair, actor Jack Thompson and video-blogger Natalie Tran, in conversation with highly-regarded industry journalist Sandy George on the Australian stories that have inspired them.
