Welcome to Michigan's Children's Early Childhood Action Network. We are using this network to provide timely information on a variety of topics related to early childhood issues in Michigan, with a focus on race equity and how early childhood is critical to the cradle to career continuum of child development, education, and economic success. The Office of Great Start Wants to Hear From You

In 2013, the Michigan Department of Education - Office of Great Start engaged stakeholders across the state in development of Great Start, Great Investment, Great Future: The Plan for Early Learning and Development in Michigan. This comprehensive plan contains six recommendations and numerous priority action items for advancing early learning and development. The Office of Great Start is convening 10 outreach forums around the state in June to obtain input from early childhood stakeholders as it implements the recommendations and action items.

Your input is critical to this effort. Please register to attend one of the regional forums by following this link, where you will find all of the meeting dates and locations. We recognize that not everyone who is interested will be able to attend one of the regional outreach forums. To ensure that you are able to provide input into the implementation of the plan’s recommendations, we will also be releasing an online survey on June 23 (link to survey home page) to allow us to hear from additional stakeholders. You can use the forum registration link to indicate that you would like to receive notification of the availability of the survey.

Many of the recommendations and action items in the OGS comprehensive plan call for parent, provider, and community engagement in the design and implementation of the state’s early childhood system. These forums will support OGS’s ongoing efforts to do just that. The primary purpose of the forums is to get input from a variety of community early childhood stakeholders, including program providers and parents, on the best way to share best practices, engage parents, support quality improvement, and promote local collaboration and flexibility.

A copy of the plan can be found for your reference and review at http://1.usa.gov/1eY4j32. Please share this invitation with parents, providers, and other key early childhood stakeholders in your community.  We look forward to seeing and hearing from you in June!

Mackinac Recap and State Budget Update

Legislators are back from Mackinac Island where they attended the Detroit Regional Chamber's annual Policy Conference last week.  One session focused on early childhood education featured President of the Education Trust Kati Haycock.  She urged attendees to continue to push investments in early childhood, particularly for low-income children; and to mind the equity gaps in opportunity and achievement.  A recap of her session is available on the W.K. Kellogg Foundation's website, and her presentation slides are available on the EdTrust website.

Now that legislators are back, they will be wrapping up the state budget for fiscal year 2015. There are some differences between the House-approved FY2015 budget and Senate-approved budget that will impact young children.  An overview of their budgets and points of difference are laid out in our Budget Basics report titled Fiscal Year 2015 Investments in Early Childhood in Michigan: Points of Difference to be Negotiated in Conference Committee.  You can also see how their different proposals will impact equitable outcomes for children and families of color as well as children from low-income families in our updated report titled The Fiscal Year 2015 Budget Proposals and How They Impact Equity
