Becoming a member of National AMWA is easy and comes with tons of benefits.

Please continue to send financial questions and concerns to Neha Deshpande so that she can forward them to GL Advisor financial expert, Taylor Sauer, to answer in upcoming editions of AMWA Student NewsFlash.

Calling all branch presidents - we hope that you'll forward these AMWA Student NewsFlash newsletters to your local branch members monthly. Thanks for your help with spreading the AMWA love far and wide!

Note from the Editor

Cherilyn Cecchini, National Secretary
Secretary@amwa-student.org

Within the very first few weeks of serving as national secretary, I have already witnessed the tremendous camaraderie and mentorship that takes place within this amazing organization.  I am currently a first year medical student at Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, PA.  Having been raised by a single mother, I feel passionately about maintaining adequate represenation for women within all fields, especially medicine.  I am inspired by the amount of assistance and support that my fellow members of AMWA have already provided to me.

My goals as secretary include providing prompt responses to your questions or concerns while ensuring clear, concise communication.  I hope to accurately reflect student interests within each NewsFlash! Please share your achievements and highlight all of your accomplishments by emailing summaries and photos of your events.  Reach out if you need assistance when striving to complete a goal! Let me know if you need any contact information or guidance when approaching a new task within your branch.

I am hoping to add a "spotlight" on an outstanding individual member from a different AMWA branch each month.  If you would like to nominate a member, feel free to contact me with her name, her email address, and your reason for wanting to highlight her AMWA-zing achievements!  I also plan to continue featuring AMWA-zing branch programming! A significant amount of the NewsFlash content relies on your participation and you are encouraged to contact me via email as often as you would like! I am looking forward to reading about your stories and sharing these moments with the entire AMWA student body.

UCLA Recognized Locally & Nationally
By: Lauren Wolchok, Region 9 Director

UCLA counts itself as lucky to have a strong AMWA community. The David Geffen School of Medicine (DGSOM) at UCLA was recently recognized nationally as the outstanding branch of Region 9 as well as locally by UCLA's Student Affairs Office and Medical Student Counsel with the National Representation Award, which AMWA earned for the second time. Outgoing co-presidents Sarah Young and Ying Zhang accepted the award at the Second Year Banquet.  Last year's leadership did a fantastic job of keeping the branch active and engaged in the UCLA community, while Adrienne Clark, Immediate Past President, and Lauren Wolchok, Immediate Past Secretary, both of UCLA, served on the national AMWA Executive committee in 2011-2012. Jessica Ferguson and Katherine Huang will be leading DGSOM AMWA this year and have already gotten a head start on recruiting new members at the Second Loo Weekend Activities Fair. In addition, undergraduate students at UCLA have an active AMWA branch led by co-presidents Manwinder Kaur and Harman Rahal. The undergraduate and DGSOM branches are looking forward to collaborating on programming and events next year.

AMWA Albany Branch Takes Action Against Breast Cancer
By: Neena Jube and Kate Iwamoto; AMWA Albany Medical College Co-Presidents

This spring, Albany Medical College's AMWA branch organized a raffle held at Social Rounds for the Breast Cancer Awareness Fundraiser. In collaboration with Social Committee, AMWA raised money for Capital Region Action Against Breast Cancer (CRAAB!). CRAAB! is a nonprofit organization located in Albany that provides support services and educational programs to those affected by breast cancer, while also advocating for breast cancer research.  CRAAB! will further promote breast cancer awareness in the Capital Region.
