Advocacy Corner:

Presidential Election

With the election just around the corner, we wanted to know what the major party candidates Hillary Clinton (D) and Donald Trump (R) believe, when it comes to different aspects of health care.

We have the candidates' opinions for you, in their own words:

On The Affordable Care Act:

Clinton: “The Affordable Care Act was a critically important step toward the goal of universal health care, offering coverage to 20 million more Americans, and ensuring all Americans will never be denied coverage on account of pre-existing conditions or their gender”
Trump: “Completely repeal Obamacare. No person should be required to buy insurance unless he or she wants to.”

On Abortion:

Clinton: “I believe we need to protect access to safe and legal abortion, not just in principle but in practice.”
Trump: When asked the question “The Republican platform every four years has a provision that states that the right of the unborn child should not be infringed. And it makes no exceptions for rape, for incest, for the life of the mother. Would you want to change the Republican platform to include the exceptions that you have?” Trump responded, “Yes, I would.”

On Paid Family Leave:

Clinton: Per her website, Clinton will “guarantee up to 12 weeks of paid family and medical leave to care for a new child or seriously ill family member, and up to 12 weeks of medical leave to recover from a serious illness or injury of their own.”
Trump: “I think we have to keep our country very competitive, so you have to be careful of it.”

Caroline is a medical student in the New York Medical College’s Class of 2017. She attended the College of William and Mary, receiving a B.S. in Neuroscience and Women’s Studies.  She then went on to earn a M.S. in Physiology from Georgetown University.

While at William and Mary, Caroline studied abroad in South Africa, where she had the opportunity to volunteer in local townships and refugee camps, working directly with families affected by HIV and AIDS. This experience sparked  her passion to find a way to better understand this disease and subsequently improve the lives of those affected by the illness. She has since continued her HIV research.

She is an active member in the NYMC AMWA chapter and has served as the 2014-2015 branch co-president and the 2015-2016 Student Region 2 Director. This year she is looking forward to supporting branches in developing their local programming, and would LOVE to hear about any local, regional or national programming ideas!
