Mica Esquenazi, National Student Secretary

This month's newsflash highlights our upcoming interim meeting, ongoing "Resident On Call" program, and new spectacular member benefits. A great deal of our AMWA physician mentors that will be attending our national conferences are involved in breast surgery, a field with a very interesting history. A wonderful collection of essays that addresses breast surgery and other topics related to women's health is, Women in Health in America edited by Judith Walzer Leavitt. One essay highlights the story of Susanna Dillwyn Emlen, an upper class woman from a strong Quaker community who underwent a mastectomy in 1814, before the advent of popular routes of anesthesia. Mrs. Emlen's experience with breast cancer is revealed in letters she wrote to varying family members and reveal a great deal about the history of women as patients. This book is one great way to further your education about women's history. Continue furthering women in medicine through your work with AMWA.

Resident On Call
Personalized Q&A with AMWA Residents!

Read our May Resident on Call on the AMWA blog
Resident On Call is a new AMWA program that brings together AMWA's resident and medical student divisions. Every month, an AMWA resident will be taking questions from all AMWA medical students. All questions will be screened and those chosen for "Resident On Call" will be answered through the AMWA blog.

June's Resident On Call is: Parin Patel

Parin Patel, MD recently graduated from Drexel University College of Medicine and will continue her training at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Obstetrics & Gynecology. Last year, Parin helped launch AMWA's Undergraduate Student Division and this year she is serving as the Residency Division Co-Conference Chair. As intern year starts soon, Parin welcomes questions regarding studying for board exams, choosing a specialty, away rotations, applying, traveling, and interviewing for residency, and developing that infamous rank list. Futhermore, Parin and her fiancé couples matched to their first choice program and she is happy to help anyone navigate this process. As the year progresses, Parin can provide more information about being an OB/GYN intern.

Region 2 Update
Successful “Women in Medicine” Banquet at Albany Medical College
This spring AMWA leaders at Albany Medical College hosted a dinner panel with Dr. Tara Renna, Dr. Mina Sun, Dr. Valerie Brutus, and Dr. Ursula Matulonis. Dr. Renna is a second year resident and current president of the AMWA Residency Division, who reflected upon making the decision to pursue OB/GYN after recognizing how much she loved working with pregnant women. Dr. Sun described her journey navigating the financial challenges of private practice and converting her once family home into a patient care facility. Dr. Brutus shared her experience of being a new mother and organizing time to provide care as a breast surgeon on regular medical missions to Haiti. Dr. Matulonis, Medical Director and Program Leader of the Medical Gynecologic Oncology Program at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, encouraged students to make regular contact with their mentors and to assess the compatibility of the relationship early on.
