StudioAMWA

Artist

in Residence

Check out Shilpa Darivemula,
our amazing
Artist in Residence!

A fascination for science and a love for conversation directed Shilpa towards medicine, while her training in Kuchipudi, one of seven classical dances from India, drove her towards movement.

Captivated by the power of dance, Shilpa has developed projects to use it as a tool for community development, spending her summers in college teaching dance to inner-city youth, interning in Dance Movement Therapy at a local hospital, and even teaching refugee women to share their traditional dances in a weekly women’s group.

She currently attends Albany Medical College as a second-year medical student and continues to merge medicine and dance by working with artists and school administration in utilizing the arts to increase social and self-awareness in her community.

"Superwomen in White Coats"

Studio AMWA and Doctors Who Create would like to have medical schools design a white coat with what the coat means to them.  Each school that participates must send photos of the drawings and coats to studioamwa@amwa-doc.org by March 17, 2017. The top 5 schools with the most creative coats will be asked to bring their coats to the National Conference and have them displayed in a public art gallery on both Studio AMWA and DWC websites.

 AMWA REGIONAL CONFERENCE SUCCESS!!!

Our Regional Directors and their leadership teams managed to organize some amazing events!
Check out some of the highlights from the Region 3 Conference!

 The AMWA Region 3 Conference

was simply amazing!

The AMWA Region 3 Conference took place on Saturday, Oct. 29th 2016, at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. About 50 medical students from VA, PA, MD, and DC attended. After breakfast and a short welcome from the Region 3 Director, the conference started with the keynote speech by Dr. Carol Ziminski, the first female chief resident of the Hopkins Osler Internal Medicine service.

Participants then broke into small group sessions to discuss the topic of female leadership. Dr. Sheila Hofert then led participants in an interactive session on wellness, including a guided meditation session.  Participants then made 60 chemotherapy care packages for women with breast cancer.

Following lunch, a medical student panel focusing on how to navigate your specialty selection took place with students applying for internal medicine, surgery, OB/GYN, urology, and pediatrics present. Dr. Estelle Gauda then led an interactive Negotiation Skills workshop in which participants discovered their preferred negotiation style and practiced negotiation in small groups.

A panel of 5 female physicians, representing internal medicine, surgery, OB/GYN, family medicine, and anesthesiology, described their journeys in their respective specialties and current leadership positions, discussed issues related to work life balance in their fields, and gave general advice to the medical students in attendance. The conference concluded with a short presentation by the regional director about national AMWA initiatives and the benefits of national membership, and was shortly followed by a networking event at a local restaurant.

Best wishes to you this new year from your AMWA Student Leadership Team!
