The American Medical Women’s Association is proud to announce the 98th Anniversary Annual Meeting will be held in New York City on March 15-17, 2013 at the historic New York Palace. Bringing together physicians and medical students from all over the United States, special emphasis will be placed on mentorship and networking among this diverse group of women in medicine. Educational opportunities for physicians, medical students and residents alike will include presentations by nationally recognized leaders in medicine in addition to experts on a variety of topics such as finance, medical writing, family life, and leadership.
The annual Gala dinner will take the form of a yacht cruise, with breathtaking views of the New York City skyline, jazz accompaniment and a selection of gourmet food. Students and residents will have the opportunity to present their research projects, which will conclude with the distribution of several prestigious awards. Finally, student elections will take place on Sunday March 17th as we conclude the conference. Look out for upcoming information on AMWA student board positions and submission deadlines.

Women's Health in the Commonwealth of Kentucky

After years of failed attempts, it appears that healthcare reform in the United States is finally moving forward. With the passage of the Affordable Care Act in March 2010 and the June 2012 Supreme Court decision that upheld the constitutionality of the individual mandate, most Americans will now be required to have health insurance and have federally protected rights to be covered by insurance despite pre-existing conditions. We as doctors must be informed about the developments in health policy that will certainly affect our future careers and patients. Therefore, I encourage you to refer to the Kaiser family foundation’s website for an excellent summary of the bill here, or the US government’s website on healthcare reform here, or my Master's essay here.
Treasurer's Corner: AMWA Fundraising Tips
By: Neha Deshpande, Treasurer
One great event to kick-off the school year is a white coat embroidery fundraiser. Not only can this raise funds for your AMWA student branch, but it can increase the recognition and awareness of your group on your campus. The AMWA branch at Harvard medical school recently organized a very successful embroidery fundraiser. All the first-year medical students were contacted with the option of having their names embroidered on their white coats. All coats were collected at the medical student education center. AMWA members then arranged a time for coat pick-up at the student activities fair, where students also learned more about AMWA, its mission, and how to become a branch member. The funds that were raised will be used towards branch recruitment and networking programs. Great work HMS AMWA!
