Artifact of the Month: AWH Hospital No. 1
By Dyani Loo, M.D.
See how American Women's Hospitals Service started-- our new series highlights the student research being done to preserve stories about the advancement of women in medicine and the overseas medical projects and clinics supported by AWHS over the last century. AWHS is a key figure in women’s history with historical materials housed at the Legacy Center, Archives & Special Collections in Philadelphia. Our student members are working to help process these materials in order to keep these stories alive for new generations.
In 1917 the Medical Women's National Association (which was later renamed AMWA) established a war service committee in order to create a census of the medical women in the country and to plan how to apply their resources to the war effort. World War I had already entered into its third year, women at that time were not accepted by military branches of the government, and the government had no plan to organize them for war service. The war service committee, adopting the name American Women’s Hospitals, decided that they wanted to take charge by providing individual medical service abroad and also by establishing military hospitals overseas. AWHS Clinic Spotlight: Clinic Nepal
By Dyani Loo, M.D.
Established in 1997, Clinic Nepal supports over 50,000 people in Megauli, Chitwan District, Nepal through different projects, holistically providing basic medical care, education, sanitation, livelihoods and more in order to improve community health. In addition to its main Friendship Clinic, Clinic Nepal also runs health camps that offer both medical and dental treatment to the even more remote areas of Chitwan. The clinic also contributes to overall community stability with projects like their kindergarten programs and children's home.
The founding of Clinic Nepal and its many projects are an inspiring example of the power of individuals to make a substantial difference. Their efforts every year bring hope to the thousands of vulnerable patients and children who are protected by their safety net. Continue reading about Clinic Nepal and its founder, Hari Bhandary’s story of how it all began here.
