Cherilyn Cecchini, National Secretary

Happy 2013 to all of our AMWA student members, residents, and physicians! For me, 2012 was a fantastic year and I am excited to see what 2013 has to offer. I am nervous knowing that Step 1 of the USMLE is rapidly approaching, but at the same time I find comfort in knowing that I have such fantastic support and mentorship both at Jefferson and through my AMWA student membership.

I am looking forward to attending the annual meeting in NYC and it will certainly be bittersweet to pass my position as National Secretary to another young woman, but I am confident that I will be leaving all of my responsibilities in great hands. I am hopeful to continue my efforts in AMWA this year and beyond as I continue my medical education.

Still Time to Apply for a Kaplan Scholarship!
Application Cycle: December 15 - January 31

We at national AMWA know that the cost of USMLE test prep might be beyond a medical student’s budget, so we'd like to help.  National AMWA has partnered with Kaplan to provide scholarships for Kaplan Medical Test Prep.  We are excited to announce that AMWA will be awarding two scholarships—each valued at $1000—that can be used towards Kaplan Test Prep.  Awardees must be national AMWA members and will be chosen based on embodiment of the goals of AMWA. Financial need, though not a requirement, is also considered.

Download the application here. Email completed applications and supplemental materials here. Please submit applications only during the listed periods. All applicants will receive email notification of receipt of application. Applicants will be notified of the panel's decision by email three weeks after the application cycle's deadline.

AMWA Presentation at the AAMC Conference in San Francisco

At the 2012 Annual Meeting in Miami, FL, our Student Conference Committee sought to address the need for formal mentoring of women physicians by organizing a mentoring breakfast. Based on a modified model of the AAMC Conversation Café and the specific concerns of student members, the breakfast brought female physicians and students together to discuss several keys issues relevant to women working in medicine.

Topics included: Work/Life Management: Relationships & Childbearing, Work/Life Management: Transitioning from Work to Home, Career Building for Women in Medicine, and The Challenges of Working on Teams. The mentoring breakfast was featured at the AAMC conference in order to demonstrate how the Conversation Café format can be modified to meet the goals of an individual organization and to present the valuable advice that students gained from the breakfast. The event was well-received and proved to be a successful method of providing female medical students with gender-specific career advice. It can be implemented in medical schools throughout the nation.
