ANNOUNCEMENTS

Calling all branch presidents: we hope that you'll forward these AMWA Student NewsFlashes to your local branch members!

NOTE FROM THE EDITOR

Komal Paladugu, National Student Secretary

Hey everyone!  From working with the  ladies on the board to the guiding support of our physician and residency divisions, this year has been a very enriching experience.  Deciding to attend the national conference last year was one of the best decisions I made. I remember the feelings of rejuvenation and inspiration after being in the presence of such accomplished and driven women.  This year's conference will no doubt be even more robust and will reflect the quickly growing AMWA membership. In addition, this conference will mark the beginning of AMWA's centennial year! I highly encourage everyone to attend the conference to put the faces to the names you've been seeing floating around all year!  National AMWA has made a huge impact on me and I look forward to sharing the experience with you all! Any ideas for improvement?  Feel free to contact me

AWHS Fundraiser

By Kimberly Faldetta, AWHS Student Chair

Help teach your community about global health while raising money for a great cause! The American Women's Health Service (AWHS) is AMWA's global health branch and the main way the AMWA helps women worldwide. AWHS sponsors women's health services in Peru, Uganda, Haiti, Nepal, Tanzania, and several clinics in the United States.

AWHS is reaching out and asking branches to hold fundraisers that center around teaching young people (or each other) about global health and international women's rights. This could be a movie night, international potluck dinner, guest speaker--the list goes on!  In addition to raising awareness about a great cause, the branch that raises the most money will win the AWHS Global Health Education Award. Fill out the following form to enter your branch in the Education Award competition.  Deadline for entry is January 31, 2014.  For more information, feel free to email us

National Chair Update

By Kathryn Anderson, External Relations Chair

As External Relations Chair I have worked further AMWA’s relationships with other organizations and companies. Within the last couple months I have worked with the rest of our executive board to finalize agreements with both AMWA and GL Advisor. GL Advisor is a full-service, financial advisory firm that specializes in assisting medical students and recent graduates with managing their student debt.  AMWA members we now have a $45 discount off of one year of service with GL Advisor! GL  Advisor will be having a session to educate us on the options of loan repayment at AMWA’s 99th Annual Meeting. I encourage all of those attending the national meeting to attend GL Advisor’s informative talk. In addition,  AMWA will now be represented at AMSA’s national conference. Keep an eye out for a joint webinar with AMSA on advocacy topics!

For more information, take a look at our membership benefits. I look forward to continuing to serve as External Relations Chair and working on finalizing relationships with other organizations and companies!

Member Highlight: Meera Thakkar

My name is Meera Thakkar and I am currently a second year student at the University of Illinois-Chicago College of Medicine. I did a BA/MPH combined program at Case Western Reserve University, which allowed me to obtain my bachelors degree in Biology, as well as work on my Masters in Public Health. You can kind of say women’s health and empowerment is my calling. I was diagnosed with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome at the age of 19, 7 years after the first onset of my symptoms. I used the opportunity to do an MPH thesis to look at sources of support that young women with PCOS have. It’s a very confusing condition that can be easily overlooked; which is why I want to focus my career around women’s reproductive health and raising awareness of conditions like PCOS. I joined AMWA because I love everything that it stands for: advocacy, empowerment, and education. These are the three principles that I ground my medical career on and we cannot truly be leaders without emphasizing all of these tenets.  I look forward to getting more involved in AMWA and sharing with others this incredible organization and its principles.
