GEEK OUT: YOGA 101
5 Min. Desk Yoga
I created Geek Yoga out of compassion for those of us who sit hunched over at the computer all day, but who might feel a little intimidated to go to public yoga classes.
The good news is that it doesn't even take a full class to counteract some of our non-ergonomic work habits. A few backbends, shoulder rolls and side stretches in just five minutes a day will go a long way. On a related note, check out today's Sticky Habits blog post at LAC and join my 5min/day challenge! There's even a new template involved :)
Here's a short sequence to try (yes, right now at your desk or wherever you are):
-
Shoulder rolls: Roll your shoulders up to your ears, then down and back (x3). Switch directions.
-
Cat/Cow at your desk: put your hands on your kneecaps. Inhale as you arch your chest forward and look up, pushing on your knees for leverage; exhale as you completely round your back and look down, sending your shoulderblades to the wall behind you, pulling on your knees for leverage.
-
Neck rolls: tuck your chin to your chest, hold for 3 breaths. Slowly roll your chin to the one side, lengthening the distance between your opposite ear and shoulder. Slowly roll back through center to the other side. Repeat this (as slowly as possible) three times.
-
Side stretches: clasp your hands above your head and flip your palms up so they are facing the ceiling. Use the interlocking of your fingertips to help pull you over to the right side, stretching out your left side-body and hold for three seconds, then switch sides. Repeat once more on each side.
-
Neck release and gentle backbend: take that same clasped hand position and hold the back of your neck just below your occipital ridge. Pull your neck up and out of your back and gently lean back, opening up your chest and arching in your upper spine.
-
Release it all (shake out your hands and arms at your sides), then sit up nice and straight at your desk. Shoulders up, down and back; chest broadening across the collarbones; tail slightly tucked; imagining a rope is pulling you up to the ceiling from the crown of your head to grow two inches taller. Take a nice deep inhale, and loud sighing "I feel amazing" exhale!
Give this a try and report back, I'd love to hear how it goes! And I take requests . . . let me know if you have any burning yoga questions that you'd like me to answer in a future newsletter. |
