Expert Guides
What are some of the advantages and disadvantages of using a tour guide when travelling?
An expert guide is a great way to enhance your experience of the destination, and can save you a lot of time in researching your trip. This is one of the great advantages of group travel - you have a tour director who coordinates the tour plus expert local guides who you pick up along the way. They have local knowledge, so they are usually trained in the history, culture, traditions and must see attractions. They often know the best restaurants to go to, and can introduce you to local people so you can have an authentic experience. In foreign countries, they can bridge the language barrier and help you be aware of local customs so that you know what to say, what to pay for something in a market or how to deal with beggars. Plus they help ensure your safety in unfamiliar environments.
A disadvantage is that you may give up flexibility if you join a group tour. Sometimes local guides will take you to shops or markets where they receive a commission, which can be awkward if you do not buy. And the cost of a private guide can be high in some locations.
