In this issue, we are talking about Cottage Season!  If you're like us, all you can think of when the weather is beautiful is heading up to the cottage.  Then again there are those of us who are finally ready to put pen to paper and start building the cottage of our dreams.  In this newsletter we'll share building tips for your remote cottage, a delicious summer recipe the entire family will adore as well as a few tips for a harmonious relationship between cottage owners and the local wildlife.

We are also proud to share that we've just celebrated our 1 year anniversary at our Aldergrove location (26020 31B Avenue) as well as 35 years in operation.  Looking back on the past years we are reminded of just how lucky we are to have such a remarkable team.

Our designers – Chris, Greg, June, Randy & Naohiko have been kept busy designing dream homes (and cottages) for our clients, Paul our marketing and operations guru has been busy as ever meeting clients from all over the globe.  Glen and Roy, our warehouse team, have been kept out of trouble with our current projects and with the up keep of our beautiful Timber Frame facility.  Simon, our project manager has had an eventful couple of months as he is working on our Fort Langley project along with an up and coming project taking place in Burnaby.  As for Larry, Joanne and Erin – things are always exciting in the office.  Whether they are updating our social media pages, taking clients on tours or making sure lines of communication are open with our suppliers, these three are sure to be kept on their toes through the busy summer months.

If you'd like to set up an appointment to view our Timber Frame facility or to chat about your Timber Frame and Log ideas please feel free to call Erin to set an appointment.  You can contact us at 1-866-TAMLIN1 or
Remote Build.  Did your heart just skip a beat?  Well sadly those two words have been known to scare cottage and home owners and for no reason because Tamlin has you covered!

Tamlin Homes has been building on remote locations since 1977 when the Log Cabin look was popular.  However, in the last few years, our clients are choosing to build Classic Contemporary homes for themselves.  These remote builds are often located on small islands off the B.C. Coast Line as well as Lake Country across Canada.

Simon, Tamlin’s Project Manager, has a few tips for those looking to build in remote locations:

Do your research
What style of home/cottage are you looking for?  Does it suite your life style?  Is your location convenient for you and your family?
Find land that you LOVE
Can you envision yourself on this property in 20 years?
Find out who your Builder is.
Visit previous building sites, talk to his or her clients for honest feedback.
Choose a Builder you can be open and honest with
Does your builder have your best interest in mind?
Talk about time frame
Many home owners are surprised to see how quickly a home can be built to the lock up stage.
Avoid making changes to your remote build.
Of course, there will always be something that comes up in regards to your build and changes that need to be made.  Try to keep those changes to a minimum.
Keep your build simple
Simplicity offers efficiency which can save you money.
Communication is the Key
Open communication is key to every successful build.  If you are able to communicate your needs, wants, wishes & budget you are sure to end up with a home you love.
Never under estimate the power of landscaping.  A beautiful deck or patio will become an extension of your indoor living space.  Be sure to allow space for outdoor dining, living and fun.

In the end experienced builders, like Tamlin Homes, will be able to help plan, design and build your Remote Home within budget.

The sun is shining and it’s the perfect opportunity to visit the family cottage.  For those of you who have owned a cottage you know all too well about visitors... like your long lost cousin from up North, the best friend from grade 12 that you haven't seen since graduation and we can't forget about those oh so cute visitors we call wildlife.

Throughout much of North America, humans and animals live and vacation side by side.  It's always nice to remind those human visitors about proper human and animal interaction.

Remind your guests:
  • Never feed wildlife or try to approach them – admire them from a distance
  • When outside always store your food and drink in a wildlife-resistant container
  • Clean up around your cottage and properly dispose of garbage.  This may mean making frequent trips to the dump, but it's better than the alternative
  • Do not leave pet food outdoors, to wildlife it's an easy meal
  • Try not to step on or pick Wild Greenery.  These plants are not only food for our furry friends but they also help prevent erosion around your property

Did you know?
  • Contrary to popular belief, bats are beneficial creatures to have around your cottage!  These amazing animals help control rampant insect populations so why not invest in a bat houses this season.  They are a great way to keep your yard and cottage insect free.
