JFON-NE Urges the New Trump Administration to Uphold Our Nation’s Value of Welcoming Immigrants
Omaha, January 25, 2017 - With the issuance of President Trump’s executive orders today, and reports of additional orders to come, the new administration is doubling down on its anti-immigrant promises from the campaign. The orders are aimed at, among other things, the construction of a border wall, increased deportations and detentions, and barring refugees from certain war-torn countries. In response, Justice for Our Neighbors-Nebraska is adding its voice to the chorus of organizations and individuals strongly opposed to such policies.
Emiliano Lerda, executive director of JFON-NE stated, “Engraved into the base of our country’s monument to liberty reads our ethos: ‘Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free.’ This executive order is a contravention of the constitutional values and principles that were essential elements to build a prosperous and thriving nation under the promise of liberty and justice for all.”
Barring access to protection for refugees fleeing horrific violence and brutal dictatorships, regardless of their religious tradition, should not be tolerated. A border shutdown or mass detention will be morally and economically detrimental to our community and to our country. We betray our values as a nation to allow such injustice within our midst.
Now is the time to stand up and let our voices be heard.
JFON-NE, along with many other community partners, will continue to zealously advocate for our immigrant and refugee neighbors. Please help us share the message to oppose the building of walls and denying protection to those who need it most.
