Australia beats Big Tobacco!

In a world first, Australia has rejected Big Tobacco's challenge to the country's new law on cigarette plain packaging.

This means that from 1 December 2012, all tobacco sold in Australia will be in the same colour packages, without logos or other brand markings.

We will soon be three months from the start of the fifth session of the FCTC Conference of the Parties (COP5) – a significant milestone, because it is the deadline for most of the official COP documents to be made public in all official UN languages.

Strengthening the FCTC review process

The WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) is one of the fastest endorsed UN treaties, but implementation remains uneven among its 176 Parties. An additional treaty mechanism, an inter-sessional forum focused solely on implementation review and assistance, is needed to analyse progress, and address challenges to implementation.

Proposals for global action on NCDs

FCA calls for explicit recognition of the FCTC, its Conference of the Parties (COPs) and its reporting instrument in all key global tools to prevent and control non-communicable diseases (NCDs).
